About the country

Location of the place

Sao Paulo is in the southeast of Brazil. It is 70 km from the coast of Atlantic Ocean.

City

Sao Paulo is one of the biggest cities in the world. The people call this city as the business centre of Brazil.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

Santos is the closest place to Sao Paulo where you can go to the beach. Praia do Tombo is one of the beautiful and cleanest beaches close to SP. Maresias is a good place for surfing and it is the place of the World Champion in surfing Gabriel Medina.

Work description

In the beginning I visited the courses about electric and hybrid cars with other students. After some time, I started to learn and make practical activities in the workshop. SENAI schools have good relationship with industrial companies in Brazil and become the best equipment for training. So, in the workshop I could train on many different vehicles for example Toyota Hilux with combustion engine, BMW Mini electric version, Toyota Prius Hybrid, etc. I also visited Oils and Fuels Laboratory, Dynamometers, and one of the best Brazilian companies for Automotive parts Suporte Rei. During my internship I made the presentations for students and teachers, helped in professional development courses.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

4000 BRL = 620 EUR per month. I paid 1500 BRL per month for the room with bathroom in the hotel and 1500 BRL for restaurants, food, and trips to the beach. It was paid the quarantine of 2 weeks and PCR test. For me it was sufficient and at the end of my internship I still had enough money left.

Language requirements

English B1/B2. I recommend starting to learn Portuguese before to come to Brazil. It will be very helpful for you to make good contacts, make friendships with local people and get more information at work. But in general Brazilians love people from abroad and they are patient if you don’t speak Portuguese. You can use Google translator too.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

IAESTE student found for me the room in the hostel in the centre of SP. For me it was too far away from my work. After my colleague found for me the best room in the hotel for 1500 BRL/month and only 5 minutes by walk to my work.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

I was picked up by IAESTE student at the airport to the hostel. It was organised an event, but I couldn’t come at this time. Also, by the visa process I asked IAESTE member to help me in federal police.

Meeting other foreign students

Unfortunately I couldn’t meet the other students in person but we had contact on WhatsApp.

Sport and culture

I could go to the different beaches and surf there. I also like scuba diving, but it was rainy between August and November. In Sao Paulo, Interlagos is the Formula One race.

Food, local specialties

Traditional Brazilian food is Fejoada (black bean and pork stew). Traditional Brazilian drink is Caipirinha. Usually Brazilians eat rice, beans, french fries and meat/chicken. Try north Brazilian food and grilled meat or fish.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

WhatsApp, Email

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Be financially prepared for the first month, because the first salary is in one month. Don’t use your credit card in the airport (very high fee). It’s easy to find adapter in every store in Brazil for 1 EUR.

What not to forget with you

Warm clothes, clothes for rainy days. The weather in Sao Paulo can change every hour. The people say: "In Sao Paulo you can have 4 seasons in one day." But it doesn’t snow there of course :D

Benefits of the internship

A lot of practice, you are able to work in international team, you improve your English and Portuguese, you learn the new culture and contacts for your future career.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

Excellent. I communicated through email and always got answers on my questions.

Overall experience with IAESTE

IAESTE has good organisation even during COVID times. I like this program because there are offers to do the internship in all continents. Also, you can apply every time of the year.
