About the country

Location of the place

Osijek is the inland city. City is situated near to border with Serbia. It is the largest city and the economic and cultural centre of the eastern Croatian region of Slavonia. Osijek is located on the right bank of the river Drava.

City

It is a biggest city in Slavonia. I fall in love with this city. It is big city but it isn’t so large like cities in Czech. So you don´t have so much people, traffic and tourists, but you have everything what you need for a live. You can find shopping malls, lots of food stores, fitness centres, restaurants, pubs and bars because this city is home of students. Nearly every week there are some festivals or other culture events, which you can visit. You don´t need a card for tram and busses but bike is necessary. Bike paths are everywhere you go and everything is close to you. You should visit local Zoo park, Tvrđa and Pedestrial bridge.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

The area around is rich in vineyard. So if you will be there in September, I recommend you to visit “Vinska cesta”. Beautiful bike trip to national park Kopacki Rit. It is close, about 10 km from Osijek and there are wooden walkways in the park. If you like excitement you should visit adrenalin park Zlata Greda.
Big cities like Belegrad, Budapest and Zagreb are really close. Buses go to this cities very often, so it isn’t problem.

Employer

Employer

I worked in Žito d.o.o. It is new, prosperous and modern company, where young people work. They are nice and helpful. I didn´t have any problems with some kind of request (and it didn't have to be just for work). I had been working 8 hours per day, but it wasn’t so hard. If I needed free day, they gave it to me.

Work description

My fulfilment was learn everything about meat production from delivery of raw meat to final product and its packaging. I was there for four weeks, so I spent every week in each production. First week I was on Salami Aurea, second on Prosciutto, third on Copadio and the last one on packaging. At start of the week they showed me plant and explained their kind of production. Second point was reading some educational material about the plant and products. And between I went everywhere with my bosses to saw how it is work in industry and what work as a technologist entail.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

My salary was 3200 Kun. Accommodation costed 950 Kun. If you will not eat in restaurants and don´t want to travel I think it is enough. But if you want to live and enjoyed to the fullest it isn´t enough. I spent here about 6000 Kun.

Language requirements

Everybody in company speak English. I didn´t need any other language. Just workers and people in the service don´t know English very well. But I was nicely surprise that waiters and waitresses can speak English fluently.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

I was in Srednjoškolski đački dom. It is a high school dormitory for girls. Bathroom is shared with 8 another girls. They prepared bed sheets (which is changed every week), pillow and blanket. You have available washing machine and dryer. In a dorm is a place for bikes, too. The biggest disadvantage is missing kitchen. There was just small one hotplate on the corridor and small fridge on the room.
My accommodation was provided by IAESTE and it cost 950 Kun.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

I came by car, so I didn´t need someone to pick me up. But I had these possibilities and other trainees used this possibilities. They were helpful and they did everything for us to have a good time. Nearly every evening I had a plan with them.
One weekend in September we had and event named “Get Osijek”. It was about meet each other, play pinball, have a lunch and do city challenge. It was very well organized.

Meeting other foreign students

There was about eight more foreign students from different countries. We had group on FB and we agreed on program and we were together every day.

Sport and culture

Here is a lot of place where to go for sport. You can go on the other side of river and run or make workout. If you like a fitness centre you can choose from many of them. I was in Blue gym and it was great. It isn’t so expensive but it is new, big and clean. If you like a bike, you have a many options and there aren’t hills.
In culture it depends what do you like. But nearly each week there are some festivals. Osijek is famous for its old cinema which has a typical atmosphere. The best club is Cube club. We found free classes of latin dance and it was every evening. There are possibilities to play bowling and ride kart at Portanova shopping centre.

Food, local specialties

Food shops are everywhere. You can choose which one is the best for you. If you go to restaurant is normal price about 50 Kuna and higher. If you want good meal, try El Paso, Rustika, Strossmayer, Kod Ruze (it is a realy good reastaurant for local meal, but you need make a reservation).
I had lunches at work for 25 Kuna and it was pretty good. It was the easiest way. I can choose from 3 kind of menu every day.
Local student have a special student´s card and if someone doesn´t use it and borrow you, you can go to student´s restaurant and have a meal for 10 Kuna tree times per day. So you can share this card. But I didn´t need it.
Typical meal is burek. It is like pie with a meat or cheese or spinach. I really liked it. This kind of meal you can find in “Pekarnica” (it means bakery). I found little local bakeries and bough it here because from big chain named Mlinar wasn´t so good.

Benefits of the internship

I met a lot of new people and learnt little bit Coraitan. It was really great experience for my life and knowledge what I have from Žito, I will use in my future job.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

It was difficult. Sometimes it was really disappointing and confusing. They had a lot of time for everything and in the last time they wrote you email what you need and you must let everything and do it.

Overall experience with IAESTE

Sometimes it is hard to arrange something. But it is easiest way to go on intership.
