Location of the place
The internship was located in the city San Juan. This city is located in the west of the Argentina. The internship took place at the National University of San Juan at the Faculty of Engineering, institute of mountain road contruction, Accomodation was located near the faculty.
City
San Juan is the capital of san juan province. It is a beautiful city with lots of interesting places and with friendly people. The rich cultural events are also an advantage.
Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
A lots of interesting and beautiul places are closed to San Juan. In the vicinity of the town there are two beautiful dams, where you can do water sports. Another interesting subject for a trip is the city of Mendoza, which is located very close to San Juan. In Mendoza you can visit the vineyards with wine tasting, or go on a trip to the mountains.
Employer
Employer
I worked at the Escuela de Ingeniería caminos de montaňa. My tutor Ing. Pablo Girardi Mancini was very friendly and helpful in working on my project. I was satisfied with my employer.
Work description
My work dealt with the stability of the tunnel portal. First I had to learn how to work in the program Rocscience and study the issue. Only then could I start solving the stability of the specified portal. I learned many new things.
Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)
The salary was not great. Since we could eat for free in the school dining room and had breakfast in the accommodation, it was sufficient.
Language requirements
Good English was required for the internship. I haven't used much English until then. But it was enough for my internship. My little knowledge of Spanish was good for living in Argentina, which I improved here.
Accommodation (price, who provided it)
The university provided accommodation for a foreign student at a nearby hotel. Accommodation was in a quadruple room. The rooms were clean and nice.
Social life
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
I arrived in San Juan by bus. At the terminal, two students who were doing guides for foreign students were waiting or me. They took me by car to the hotel. The students who made the guides organized the trips, communicated with us. Communication with IAESTE was very good.
Meeting other foreign students
I live in the hotel with other oreign students. They very helped me whe I arrived. We organized the trips together. I met students from Colombia, Mexico, Serbia and Brasil.
Sport and culture
The cultural life on my internship was very rich. The Faculty organized cultural events such as International Day. Furthermore, we were informed by IAESTE management about cultural events in the city. It was possible to visit the theater and the galleries. It was also possible to do many sports at the university.
Food, local specialties
The university allowed us to attend the school canteen. But the food here was not enough for me, so I preferred to eat in restaurants. Restaurants offered a variety of dishes. Most often were pizza, burgers and sandwiches. Typical food in Argentina include meat, especially steaks and traditional "asado", which is traditionally grilled meat.
Other information
Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic
The possibilities of communicate with the Czech Republic was wery good. It was possible to communicate with emails and applications like whatsapp and messenger. Wifi at the hotel was not particularly good. At the university, wifi was better. It was also possible to buy an Argentine sim card with internet data.
Recommendations for students who will go to the same place
I recommend to students who go to the same place to visit the neighboring town of Mendoza, to make a trip to visit the vineyards with wine tasting. Another good place to visit is Ischigualasto National Park. I also recommend visiting the Punta Negra and Ullúm dams.
What not to forget with you
Everything what people need are the pasport and the money and clothes. Everything is possible tu buy in the city.
Benefits of the internship
The benefits of internship were that I could make my English and Spanish better. I also learned a lot of new things in my field that I can use in my profession. In the last case I met a lot of new people from different countries.
Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country
Communication and cooperation with IAESTE was very good and overall they took good care of students on the internship. Everything went without problems.
Overall experience with IAESTE
I have only good experience with IAESTE in the Czech Republic and Argentina. Communication with both parties was very good. Everything went without problems.
