About the country

Location of the place

Internship took place in the capital of Belgium - Brussels, in Vrije Universiteit Brussel. It's one of the finest belgian universities.

Brussels, very nice city full of opportunities for your free time. Concerts, events of every kind, museums etc. It's perfect for young people looking for some entertainment. Don't forget to try belgian beers, fries and waffles!

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

Other belgian citties like Gent, Antwerp, Brugge or go to see the sea in Ostende for example.

VUB, Physical Chemistry and Polymer Science department.

Work description

I was cooperating with Microbiology department (because of my bio-centred background). I was analysing their samples with techniques like FTIR or SEM. Also I learned to work with Reometry, testing bio-based hydrogels.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

200eur per week, sufficient for paying the rent having some extra money to spend.

Language requirements

English was essencial. VUB is a Dutch speaking university but the environment is very international so everybody speaks English anyway.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

VUB can provide accomodation, I had my own though.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

I didn't meet any IAESTE member but I didn'even need to, I lived in Brussels for a year before starting the internship. I didn't know of any events organised by IAESTE.

Meeting other foreign students

VUB is full of interesting foreighn students from all around the world. Only within my department I met people from Germany, India, Pakistan or Iran.

Sport and culture

VUB has a nice sportscentre with a wide variety of sport activities for you. Brussels itself is full of culture of any kind. Lots of museums, theatres, concerts, exhibitions and much more.

Food, local specialties

Beer, french fries, waffles, pralines!!

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Go see local food and flea markets, BOZAR is great place for all kinds of art events, buy a GO pass - it is 10 ways train ticket for 53eur which makes one way super cheap and you can travel the country.

What not to forget with you

Positive attitude and passion to learn more, that's always appreciated.

Benefits of the internship

Meeting new people from all around the world, getting to know so much more that science has to offer and grow both professionally and personally.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

I didn't comunicate with belgian IAESTE.

Overall experience with IAESTE

Without a problem.
