Internship was in Lisbon, capital city of Portugal.

City

Lisbon is the capital and the largest city of the Portugal. It is a city that effortlessly blends traditional heritage, with striking modernism and progressive thinking. Lisbon offers a rich and varied history, also nightlife and modern art.
Lisbon is a bustling and exciting city, that boasts a wide choice of activities and fascinating tourist attractions. The city has a welcoming and liberal atmosphere, while still embracing its deep-rooted heritage and extensive history

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

There are many enjoyable day trips from Lisbon, the most popular being the charming hill-top town of Sintra and the fishing town of Cascais. Other city wich you should visit is Porto and Coimbra.

Work description

I cooperate at 2 outgoing project. I was performed a series of mesocosmos trials. I was exposing organisms to know concentrations of emerging contaminants. The toxicity effects was evaluated through a series of biochemical analysis in order to assess the typical ecotoxicological features.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

The salary (745 EUR) was sufficient for local conditions. But when you want to travel around you need save up some money before arrival ( accommodation and transportation was not cheap).

Language requirements

English. A lot of people in some institutions like bank do not speak English so Portuguese or Spanish Language will help you a lot.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

400 Eur per month. It was near city center. Accommodation was provided by IAESTE.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

Non. I think this organization here was so SO bad. No one picked me up in the airport. They sent me mail with information and location of the accommodation. . IAESTE Portugal did NOT organize events/ trip

Meeting other foreign students

It is easy to make friends there. People are really nice.

Sport and culture

There was a lot of opportunity for sport, mainly surf, diving, football and other.
Every museum/ garden/ theater has reduced price for students. There are so many interesting place to visit- oceanarium, Sintra, Belém...

Food, local specialties

I am vegetarian so for me eating out was a problem. There is not popular to not to eat meat.
Portugal is famous for great wine! You can buy in every supermarkets really great wine for really low prices. Portuguese are great in bakery. You can find here lot of Pastelaria/ bakerie with almost never ending sweets and cakes items. You must have try Pastel de Nata.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Try Porto wine :D and many others kind of wine. It is pretty cheap here.
Travel around Portugal. It is possible to find cheap flight from Lisbon to Morocco so bring your passport with you.
Try to learn how to surf. There are a lot of surf school with good price for course.

What not to forget with you

Take enough cosmetics and make-up because there was pretty bad drug stores. Also take some spices mixture cause they use just basic one :D
Bring some typical gift for supervisor.

Benefits of the internship

It is new and very nice experience in a lot of ways. I learned new techniques and methods in laboratory. I traveled around Portugal and I met new people.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

Pretty bad. Before arrival, they helped me find accommodation. I had to go to the office for my check and their opening hours was bad. So every month I had to take a half day off because of this.
