Ondřej Dupal, UCT Prague,
ročník 4About the country
Location of the place
The town Freiberg is in state Saxony and is located between Dresden and Chemnitz.
City
It is small historical town full of nice narrow aisles. The number of inhabitors is around 40000. The history of town is connected with minig of silver. Because of that, there are several important metalurgical institutions.
Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
It is simple to get into cities as Dresden, Leipzig, Prague, Berlin. It is also worthy to visit Saxon Switzerland.
Employer
Employer
Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rosendorf: Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Research Technologies
Work description
The most of the time I spent in lab. I was supposed to investigate parameters for a new process of vanadium extraction from alkaine leaches.
Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)
750 EUR. Sufficient, but more would be nice.
Language requirements
English, German was nice bonus.
Accommodation (price, who provided it)
Room in student flat. Provided by IAESTE.
Social life
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
A member from LC Freiberg picked me up at railway station and brought me to my flat.
I joined IAESTE weekends in Prague, Munich and Dresden. We also made few barbeques where we invited few interns form other cities.

Meeting other foreign students
IAESTE weekends, bbqs, flat and work.
Sport and culture
Not enough possibilities to do sports in Freiberg. Only basketball court was for free. Gym was expensive for short contract. I really missed open air gym in park there.
Food, local specialties
Similar to czech cuisine - beer, cabbage, dumplings and mostly important sausages.
Other information
Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic
Phone, internet.
Recommendations for students who will go to the same place
Have money for first weeks before the first salary comes.
What not to forget with you
Maybe warm clothes for cold days.
Benefits of the internship
The biggest benefit for me was that I could speak German for three months with native speakers. The work in lab wasn't actually beneficial for me because I study chemical engineering and this internship was more about chemistry. On the other hand I had the opportunity to see how new processes might be developed.
Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country
The LC Freiberg is consisted only of three people, so they didn't really have time for extra program with us, but they were very helpful with each problem we had. Moreover they were very friendly.
Overall experience with IAESTE
Nice experience and opportunity to work in foreign country and meet people from the whole planet.
