About the country

Location of the place

Osaka is located on the southern cost of Japan's biggest island Honshu in the area called Kansai.

City

Osaka belongs to one of the largest cities in Japan. You can admire the city from Umeda sky building, which has the best view. Osaka is very famous for its variety of delicious food such as Takoyaki,Okonomiyaki, Ramen etc. There are also a lot of places to visit for fun. For example the Universal studio, Tennoji Zoo, Osaka aquarium or Spa world. Beside that Osaka has also lovely castle.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

There are a lot of places possible to visit as one day trip from Osaka. The most famous one is Kyoto, known for many beautiful shrines, castle, Gion- the geisha district etc. By express train you can reach Kyoto from Osaka in only 30 minutes. Not much further is another popular place to visit- Nara. Very beautiful historical city with many deer. On the way to Nara you can also stop by at Fushimi Inari shrine, known for its endless line of red gates (Toori). Other very close and interesting city to visit is Kobe.

Work description

I was conducting a research in advanced polymer material chemistry laboratory. My research was about doped pollypyrol derivatives grains and their use as light-responsive liquid marble (LM) stabilizers. My work was to synthesize the polymers and than analyze them by various methods (SEM, FT-IR, TGA optical microscopy etc.). I was also focusing on creating the LM using the polymers and investigated their properties, especially their interaction with NIR.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

The salary was estimated on approximately 2500yen/day, which was sufficient for everything beside some larger trips and shopping.

Language requirements

Good English was enough for this internship. The professors spoke English fluently, but the students can't/don't want to speak that much ,so they always preferred to speak Japanese with me.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

Accommodation was fully paid by the university. I stayed at the Josho gakuen dormitory, which is about 2,5 km away from Oomiya campus, where my laboratory was. I had room with my own kitchen and bathroom.
The only inconvenience was that there was wifi only in the first floor (common room) and not in our private rooms.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

I have always communicated with the OIT international center, which takes care for every exchange student. I got from the airport myself but I have received a thorough description of the way from the OIT in advance, so it was no problem. I have also joined trip organized by the international center and met with one Japanese student who also took the IAESTE internship.

Meeting other foreign students

In my laboratory there were students from Taiwan and at the dormitory there were many students from all over the world.

Sport and culture

Osaka is flat, so its really easy to ride a bicycle there. From the dormitory there is also a nice jogging path to the castle and back. Around the campus and dormitory there are also three public swimming pools.
There are whole districts in the city worth visiting to enjoy Japanese culture and dive into the atmosphere.

Food, local specialties

Osaka is famous for its delicious food, you can find specialties around every corner. Crabs, shrimps and fishes are much more cheaper in Japan than in Czech republic so I would definitely recommend to eat as much of them as possible.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

Through wifi at the campus or at the dormitory common room.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Try to borrow a bicycle. It is difficult to rent through university for short-term students but with the help of other students its possible. Commuting to school by train is really expensive so bike is very convenient.

What not to forget with you

Some money to the beginning as it is common that you will receive money from the university in the end of the month.

Benefits of the internship

I am really grateful for this opportunity. I was able to learn a lot in a field of chemistry that I am not entirely familiar with. With the professor and my laboratory colleagues we were also able to write an article about my research, which is very valuable for my future career. I could also practice the languages and get better at them.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

I have communicate with IAESTE through emails and even though there were some minor troubles, the IAESTE staff always helped me to solve everything.

Overall experience with IAESTE

I am glad for this organization. It gave me another chance to try something new and gain experience not just in research but also to work independently in different environment. The process of getting an internship in Japan works smoothly thanks to the hard work of many IAESTE members. It would be very difficult to obtain an internship otherwise.
