Bc. Jiří Merta, University of West Bohemia,
ročník 4About the country
Location of the place
Split, a city located on the shore of Adriatic Sea
City
The city is on the shore, so there is quite a lot of beaches. Those weren't very crowded during my stay, but i wasn't there during the main season. The city has quite nice historical center with restaurants etc.
Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
Plenty of islands around the city, national park, mountains. I recommend visiting Hvar, which is beautiful. There's also a park in the west of the city, called Marjan, which is really nice for running or even hiking (it's quite big).
Employer
Employer
Sveučilište u Splitu (University of Split), Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture. My professor was really nice to me during my whole stay and helped me with everything I needed.
Work description
Robot programming in ABB RoboStudio for 3D printing metal (WAAM - wire arc additive manufacturing). My program had to communicate with the sensors of distance and temperature on the robot arm and control the welding process.
Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)
Sufficient for food and accomodation and a little bit more. Not enough for travelling or partying :)
Language requirements
English, if you can say a few words in Croatian it's a plus but it's not required. Split is a very touristy city so the locals usually can speak at least a little English.
Accommodation (price, who provided it)
790 kn per month, at the local dorm next to the faculty. Very nice and new building, with canteen, gym etc. Provided by local IAESTE.
Social life
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
Local IAESTE guys are the best! Helped me with everything and went to many parties with me and other trainees.
Meeting other foreign students
There were not many other trainees, maybe 4 or 5. But since I lived in the dorm, I met many Erasmus people.
Sport and culture
There's a gym and basketball court in the dorm building. The gym is not very big but there's usually not many people in so it's sufficient. There's a swimming pool in the city.
Food, local specialties
The university canteen is cheap and quite tasty. But the food is cheap only for the university students, not trainees, unfortunately. However, you can just ask random people for their student card and get the food cheaper. For the local specialities, try rakija, burek, čevapi.
Other information
Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic
Mobile internet, and also WiFi in a plenty of places. Communication was not hard.
Recommendations for students who will go to the same place
I went off the main season, so Split was not so crowded anymore. That was quite nice. But the weather tends to get a bit cold...well, still much warmer than in Czech Republic, but not really good for laying on the beach. So pick your season with care.
What not to forget with you

Benefits of the internship
I learned a lot about programming an industrial robot, offline and online, about communication with the sensors on the robot arm, programming a PLC.
Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country
Perfect, without any problems. They helped me with everything I needed.
Overall experience with IAESTE
Great experience, would do again if I could.
