Kinematic calibration and parameter identification is important in operating and specifying any manipulator. Literature suggests several methods to do so. Some methods utilize another precisely calibrated and controlled manipulator. Such actuated and controlled manipulators give good performance, however they are not cost-effective. This proposal looks for a low-cost system with reduced design complexities by proposing a passive parallel mechanism, driven by wires. Wire driven parallel manipulator is a kind of manipulation system, where a platform is moved by several wires/cables being pulled by motors or passive devices on pulleys at the other ends. By winding and unwinding the wires, the moving platform (and the end-effector) is made to reach a desired position and pose within the work volume. The attributes of lightweight structure, large workspace and high payload-to-weight ratio are making wire driven parallel manipulators a promising alternative to the conventional rigid link manipulators in many industrial applications, such as load lifting, positioning, co-ordinate measurement, rehabilitation and assist devices. Wires/cables can apply only a unilateral force i.e. they can only pull the platform. Hence, wire driven manipulators need redundancy in wire-actuation. This adds to the complexity of the system.
The present proposal aims to reduce cost and complexity not by including any motor/actuator, but rather by achieving a balance through passive means, given that the use of wires/cables instead of rigid links itself contributes to cost reduction.
