About the country

Location of the place

Bergen city is located on the west coast of Norway. It is in the fjord, surrounded by several hills and mountains.

City

The city center is very beautiful. There are a lot of old houses which are part of UNESCO heritage. Also you can find a lake in the city center. The city center is not big, you are able to go through the center within couple of hours. The city itself is very international, you can meet different type of people and everybody can speak English very well.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

There are several hills and mountains around the city. Hiking paths to peaks are very good and it is not difficult to walk or hike. There are also two hills with cable car to the top - Floyen and Ulriken. If you like hikes, Bergen is really good place to visit. Also you can go to Odda (3 hours by bus or train) to visit very well known Trolltunga and glacier is near by too. Fjord tours are very nice too.

Employer

Employer

Western Norway University of Applied Science (HVL University). Department of civil and mechanical department.

Work description

The work consisted of two parts. First part was about working in laboratory - practical testing of material. There were special shaped specimens tested in tension or in compression. Second part was about FEM analysis - creating models in PC and running simulations by using special software - Abaqus CAE. After that I had to compare results of real test and of simulation and adjust the simulation to achieve good results which could be compared with real tests. The work was very interesting for me.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

18 000 NOK - Salary was sufficient enough. It covered all my expenses. But there is quite high tax - 35%.

Language requirements

Excellent English

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

Accommodation was provided and managed by IAESTE Norway. It was a shared flat with two other students from Norway. The kitchen was equipped with basic things, it was good enough. But the condition of bathroom and toilet was bad. Really small and quite dirty rooms. My room was very small, equipped only with bed, duvet and pillow. I missed table, chair and wardrobe. I was not able to close the roof window properly, because the locking mechanism was broken. I paid 5 000 NOK for month. Next time I would find the accommodation on my own.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

IAESTE member picked me up after I arrived in Bergen airport. There were a few organised weekends, for example in other cities. From time to time IAESTE had some funny meeting in the office.

Meeting other foreign students

We met each other during IAESTE meetings.

Sport and culture

Hiking in unlimited. There are many opportunities where to go or hike.
In Bergen, there are a lot of interesting museums which are worth to visit.
Also you can buy a membership in a gym.

Food, local specialties

Norwegian cuisine is focused on sea food and fishs. Also you can find some local dishes.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

It was really easy to communicate with my family or friend in Czech Republic. The phone tariff is the same as in CZ. Also it is easy to use different application for communication - Messenger, WhatsApp, Skype, mails....

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Bergen is rainy city so waterproof clothes is needed.

What not to forget with you

You should really bring waterproof clothes and warm clothes

Benefits of the internship

The subject/topic of internship was really interesting and I really liked the work. It has given me a lot of new practical experience with regards material testing and FEM simulation.
I think that also my English was improved.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

Communication with IAESTE people was good.

Overall experience with IAESTE

I can recommend to go working abroad to everyone. This internship was really good. I would go again but next time I would do some thing in different way - for example accommodation. I liked the work over there and it gave me a lot of new experience.
Also I liked Norway very much and I think that I will go back sometimes. Nature is amazing!
