Bc Pavlína Březinová, UCT Prague,
ročník 4About the country
Location of the place
It is located on the western side of the Pearl River in East Asia. Only one hour ride on ferry from Hong Kong (60 km).
City
Macau is a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. One of the most densely populated spots on the planet. It is a former portuguese colony. Macau consists of four parts: Taipa, Cotai, Coloane and Macau itself. The city is famous for gambling ( the Vegas of Asia).
Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
This is the best part about Macao! So many possibilities for travelling. Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, Taiwan and of course you should visit Mainland China (Yanshuo is place which you must see!!). If you are not so much into travelling there are nice places in Macau as well. Personally, my favorite ones were A-Ma temple and Guia Fortress.
Employer
Employer
I was working at University of Macau in the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences.
Work description
They gave me my own project which was about making new drug formulation-nanoparticles. I have learned how to prepare them with two different methods and how to use different machines for measuring their properties.
Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)
6400 MOP, it was more than enough for daily costs
Language requirements
English good
Accommodation (price, who provided it)
IAESTE arranged for us an accommodation at student dormitories which was fo free!
Social life
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
Nobody picked me up at the airport but I got a good description how to get into dormitories in advance. We had a few organised events (tea ceremony, dinners).
Meeting other foreign students
It was super easy because all foreign students lived at the same dormitories (16 from Europe) and we also had a group chat from the very beginning so it was easy to meet them.
Sport and culture
The school campus is awesome! You have a lot of opportunities here (gym, squash, basketball, volleybal, football, even archery ring :D). Another thing which you need to remember is club Cubic- on Thursday evenings you have here free entrance and free drinks for everybody!
Food, local specialties
The food in school canteens mostly consists from rice and meat. But in the city center you can find a lot of good chines restaurants, even some european restaurants (after one month of eating rice and noodles you will need one!). Broadway street in Taipa is really good!
Other information
Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic
Facebook, whatsapp
Recommendations for students who will go to the same place
Prepare for a big humidity! :D
What not to forget with you
You should take an umbrella, bed sheet, at least a small pillow and british adapter.
Benefits of the internship
Everything. Work experiences, getting to know an asian culture, new international friends.
Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country
Great cooperation. When somebody had a problem Patrick was there for us 24/7.
Overall experience with IAESTE
AWESOME! No complains. Thanks!!
