About the country

Location of the place

Internship was in Bergen, beautiful norwegian city located on the west-coast of Norway.

City

Bergen is a very colourful and beautiful city and has really a lot to offer - apart from famous touristic fish market and UNESCO heritage site Bryggen, the city itself is also very welcoming for nature lovers (many hills to walk around) and art lovers (I can't even count the museums) and you can get lost in the narrow streets full of cute wooden houses.
What I love about Bergen is the compact size - you can actually walk everywhere around the city center, even from the city center to the most famous viewpoint - Fløyen. Public transportation is also good and reasonably priced - well, in terms of Norway (student ticker per month). Also local people are very nice and welcoming.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

Bergen has around countless hills to hike, mainly the most famous Floyen and Ulriken, both operated also with cable car. The city is located in the heart of fjords, so there are unlimited opportunities for hiking with tent, boat cruises to islands... trips to Sognefjord, Hardangerfjord, perfect place to start a roadtrip.

Employer

Employer

I worked at the University of Bergen, at the Department of Earth Science, with work focusing on Geomicrobiology.
My main supervisor was Steffen Leth Jørgensen, and he was very welcoming and nice, everybody at the Geomicrobiology nonetheless. (Thank you!

Work description

My work consisted of performing lab analysis on deep sea sediments - firstly DNA extraction from soil samples followed by purification steps and PCR to identify microorganisms in different sediments' depths.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

Salary was sufficient (18000 NOK), although it was needed to save-up some money before arrival - I got the salary very, very late, one month after the official end of the internship and I recieved both monthly payments at once in one payment...
But in general the salary was high, enough for decent living also with couple of trips around Bergen.

Language requirements

English

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

IAESTE found me an acommodation, which was very well located, near the city center and right to bus stop, and with very reasonable price and superkind roommate.
Rent price for one month was 4100 NOK + electricity and internet, in total around 4600 per month.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

IAESTE member met me in the city center and provided me with basic information about how everything works, took me to Administration office etc.. Karen, another IAESTE member, was the one who helped me a lot during whole two months with payment and problems with d-number (number needed for getting payment).
IAESTE members organized international evening and other meetings in the office.

Meeting other foreign students

During IAESTE evenings we met with other interns in Bergen, also went to couple of trips.

Sport and culture

Unlimited hiking opportunities around Bergen and, as stated above - so many museums to choose from, f.e. KODE - museum of modern art with Munch was really interesting.

Food, local specialties

Fish soup, seafood, fish... also norwegian brown cheese - brunost, and fish.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

Skype, Messenger etc...

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

I mainly recommend to go with enough savings because you won't get the salary so fast as you should.

What not to forget with you

Well... everything waterproof would be good, since it's rainy Bergen :)
Other than that - hiking shoes, warm and windproof clothes.
And camera!
And some czech specialties - food/alcohol.

Benefits of the internship

I really enjoyed the work and participation on the research. Also I loved the city, did enough trips around Norway, met great people, got to know local culture - overall it's new and very nice experience in a lot of ways.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

IAESTE members were helpful, provided me with everything I needed, so the cooperation was good.
Only problem was with school administration and also the Bergen administration office for foreigners, which resulted in very delayed payment, but IAESTE member, Karen, tried to solve everything out even that it wasn't her (nor IAESTE's) problem.

Overall experience with IAESTE

Absolutely perfect! :) Thank you.
