About the country

Location of the place

Iran is located north from Persian gulf, in Middle-East. It's the 4th biggest country in Asia. It contains many different ecosystems: from subtropical forests in north to deserts in south.

City

Tehran is capital of Iran with almost 15 milions inhabitants. So it's really crowded city.
It's located in the centre of Iran with beautiful and high mountains at the north of the city.
There are multiple museums, palaces and most importantly parks which are one of the best things in the city.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

At the north of the city lies Alborz mountain with beautiful sceneries, there are also several reservations and parks near the city.
For trips you need to take few hours in buses. But it's totally worth it. You can visit Caspian see with subtropical climate, Ali Sadr caves near Hamedan, old Alamut castle in the mountains.
If you travel further, you can visit Esfahan with it's beautiful palaces and mosques, Yazd with buildings made from red clay hundreds years ago, remains of Persepolis near Shiraz or even Persian gulf with wonderful islands.

Employer

I was working at the Centre of Excellence in Electrochemistry. It's part of Institute of Electrochemistry, University of Tehran. It's located in north campus, about 3 km away from main campus near Engelab square. Everyday I took the bus or walked to work.

Work description

I was helping PhD. students with their research focused on electrochemical sensors (DNA, ion and drug sensors). Everyone at work was happy I was there and often invited me to join them for tea or even some non-work activities (birthday celebration or lake visits).

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

My salary was 5 000 000 Rials (500 000 Tomans), but form that i had to pay 50 000 Tomans for dormitory. This amount of money is enough if you cook yourself and don't travel outside city. But it would be foolish not to travel this country. So bring some money with you and explore Iran.
Also some employers provide free lunches for interns which helps a lot with money saving.

Language requirements

Official requirement was excellent English. Most of the co-workers knew English good, but outside university people usually don't speak English. They know only Persian, sometimes Turkish.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

Accomodation was provided by IAESTE Iran. Both dorms had guards at the entrance. They always locked the entrance between 24 and 6 o'clock, but they had to let us in when we came late (but sometimes they were angry because of it).
The rooms had two-level beds (from 1 to 3), fridge, desk with a chair, wardrobes and some even balcony. Toilet, shower and kitchen were shared at the floor. In the basement was one washing machine and table-tennis table.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

I have met my mentor at the airport where she picked me up with her dad (at 3 AM) and then we went to the dorm. Next day she showed me surroudings of the dorm and she also helped me find the work first day.
IAESTE organised events nearly every weekend, usually sightseeing in Tehran. When we wanted, mentors took us anywhere (cinema, amusement park, gym...). We also went for 5 day trip south from Tehran, where they provided us all food and accomodation.

Meeting other foreign students

I was one of the first intern to come. But after few days we were a big group of people, always hanging out somewhere. We organised our own trips, traveled the country and made barbeques in the Laleh park.

Sport and culture

There are many gyms, swimming pools and parks where you can play volleyball, football or badminton. I even saw skateboarding park. But I'm not into sports so I can't tell about the places.
Throughout the city there are many museums, palaces, cinemas and others cultural interests. I recommend visiting National museum, Azadi tower, Tabyat bridge, Roof of Tehran.

Food, local specialties

The base of every food is rice or kebab. You can get chicken, lamb or beef kebab, many different meals with rice, usually with some stew (khoresht) and saffron. You should definitely try Fesenjan, Ghormeh Sabzi, Dizi, Kale Pache and of course kebab.
Bad news for vegetarians, almost all food contains meat, they also don't consider chicken or fish as meat, so be careful.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

Even though internet at dorms wasn't fast, it was possible to make Skype calls (preferrably after midnight when the internet worked better). IAESTE also provided us with SIM cards. We could buy data packages (4G) and also call internationally (about 1 Kc per minute).

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Forget all information you heard from the news, read some travel guides about Iran and just visit this country. You are a guest so behave like one and obey their rules.

What not to forget with you

Money: you can't withdraw from non-Iranian banks.
Proper cloths: scarfs and longer dresses for girls, long trousers and shirts with sleeves for boys.
Some small gifts from home (postcards, small toys).

Benefits of the internship

I have learned some new things about work in a laboratory, even though it's not my field of study. I have met lots of wonderful people mostly from Europe but also from Africa, Asia and also Australia. Even after some time we are having reunions in Europe.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

IAESTE Iran works nearly perfect, they organised many events, helped us with any problem. Their office is in next street from the dorms and the head of IAESTE was usually there.
