Employer

Employer

Tokyo University of Science - Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
My particular workplace was fluid dynamics laboratory lead by Dr. Makoto Yamamoto.

Work description

I was working on CFD (computer fluid dynamics) simulations using PTC Creo and XFlow software. My work was a part of larger research project focused on aircraft engine acoustic liner drag.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

My salary was 30 000 JPY per week, which was just enough to cover my accommodation and food expenses. Other things like transportation, trips, plane ticket etc. were covered by my personal savings.

Language requirements

Level B2 English plus technical vocabulary was needed to complete the given tasks.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

Local IAESTE centre proposed some lodging options, but I decided to find something more suitable on my own. I found a great accommodation via Airbnb service, which was located in walking distance from my workplace and was also cheaper, than lodging proposed by IAESTE. It was a nice and new share house. I had my own private room there for the whole duration of my internship.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

One IAESTE member was waiting for me at the train station on my way from the airport and showed me the location of my accommodation and workplace. There were a lot of IAESTE events organised throughout the whole summer and I visited a few of them. First one was Japanese culture workshop, then I went to Mt. Takao and I also participated on trip to Yokohama. All of these events were really well organised, especially when I consider a large number of participants.

Meeting other foreign students

I have met a few students from other countries at IAESTE events. Those people were from all over the world (USA, Germany, China, UAE...) and we had a great time together.

Sport and culture

I participated on IAESTE Japanese culture workshop. I wasn´t really doing any sports during my stay in Japan except some hiking.

Food, local specialties

Japan and Tokyo especially is full of great food. Naming all the local specialities would be pointless, but you can be sure that you can taste something new every day.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

Since we live in the 21st century, I would say internet...

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Make sure you have enough money, plan ahead, spend wisely, be polite and respect the locals. Represent your country as well as you can.

What not to forget with you

CA$H, CA$H, CA$H

It is an expensive location, but definitely worth it.

Benefits of the internship

It was an amazing experience, I had the oportunity to visit a very different cultural environment and I met lots of great and inspirational people. I also learned a lot of new things in the field of aircraft engineering and fluid dynamics.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

Cooperation with local IAESTE group was really smooth, without any problem.

Overall experience with IAESTE

Communication with IAESTE was just fine and I did not experience any troubles during the application procedure. The overall internship experience provided by IAESTE is simply priceless and definitely worth the time and money.
