ročník 3About the country
Location of the place
Cyprus is beautiful island located in Mediterranean sea and speacialy in summer it is popular touristic destinataion. If you enjoy hot weather by the sea as hiking in the mountains you will definately fall in love into Cyprus. People here are very friendly and kind. Interesting fact is that part of this island is occupied by Turkey and many cypriots had to leave their homes and become refugees in their own country.
City
Limassol is very nice and many events are hold in the city from different kinds of music festivals, beach parties, movie festivals and so. You wont get a chance to get bored in this city. Also there is good bus connection to other cities and interesting places in Cyprus.
Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
Cyprus has really interesting historical background. You can find here ancient archeological sites near Phafos. Also you can rent a car and go camping into mountains or on the seashores of the marvelous Blue Lagoon in Akamas where you can also go by cruise from Latchi or rent a boat. You can visit capital city Nicosia which is divided between Turkey and Cyprus. Another must see place in Cyprus is Ayia Napa where you can find gold sand beaches and very wild night life.
Employer
Employer
I had very good luck with my company. I worked in Vassiliko Cement Works plc. which is one of the biggest and best companies in Cyprus. This company produces cement as it's obvious from its name and clincert not only to domestic market but also to Greece and Izrael. Plant of Vassiliko is located in industrial area called Mari. Most of the trainees had their companies located in the city, I was the only one who had to travel by bus for 45 min. to get into the company, but it wasn't such a problem cause it was company bus so the transportation was for free and also I had every day free lunch included.
Work description
Since the original offer of the interships wasn't exactly in field of my study, the company was so kind that they offered me to change my department as I wished so I could spend my time in departments connected with my specialization.
Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)
Cyprus is not really a cheap place to stay but anyway at the end it's worth all the money! Before going be aware to have some extra money on your bank account if you want to spend there a good time with other trainees and experiance adventures. Company paid me every week 160 euro in cash but it was totally up to me which way I want to get paid. For me it was the best way so I didnt have to use ATM and also brought some cash back to Czech Republic. But yeah at the end I was in loss.
Language requirements
Company required excelent english but to be honest it wasn't necessary. If you have average skills of english it's OK. Although in the company work lof of young people, not so many speak english or they know just the basics. Most of the programs and documents are in greek but dont worry it's not so hard to manage. Also people who studied college know english pretty well since lot of them studied in UK. Depends who are you working with.
Accommodation (price, who provided it)
Accommodation was provided by IAESTE on student dorms called KTISIS for 85 euro per week. Dorms are located in the old city center on the Hero's square so it's really good location. Rooms were for one person with its own bathroom and balcony view directed to the sea and shared kitchen for each floor.
Social life
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
Since the airport is in different city, you need to go by bus from Larnaca airport to Limassol. At Limassol bus station was taxi waiting for you arranged by IAESTE who took you straigh to dorms so there was no problem with arriving. During our staying there were volounteers who spend time with us. They were really friendly and helpful.
Meeting other foreign students
There was 11 trainees in Limassol and 7 of us were staying at KTISIS dorms so there was always someone you could spend time with. Someone with who you could go to the beach, do some trip etc. no time to get bored or lonely :) I made here really good friends.
Sport and culture
As I said during summer there is lot of events, just check event offers on FB and you will find for sure something for you. As well you can go play volleyball or do yoga on the beach, go run, swimmig or just lie down on the beach.
Food, local specialties
Greek food is just a pleasure. You can try Meze which is several course meal and this dish is at least for two person (you won't be able to eat it all, trust me!). Souvlaki which is pork or chicken meat on the stick, Halloumi cheese is TOP as well Greek Kebab with potatoes, Keftedes (meat balls) and much more.
Other information
Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic
Since you can now call and use your data all over EU for same price as in Czech Republic it was really easy to connect with family and friends abroad.
Recommendations for students who will go to the same place
Enjoy every day, visit one of the craziest place I ever seen "Guapa beach bar" which belongs to TOP 10 world bars. Go to Marina at the sunset, spend weekend in mountains, visit Afrodite Hills, go offroad on Akamas, whatever you like just enjoy it. Cyprus is the best place where to spend your summer.
What not to forget with you
Good mood everyting else you can buy there. But it's really hot there and humidity.
Benefits of the internship
Lot of experiences not only from my work but generaly. I met lot of interesting people, nice people, I learned to not to be so stressed about things, get more confidence.
Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country
It was OK.
Overall experience with IAESTE
Good
