About the country

Location of the place

The UAE lies in a very warm climate

City

The city is built with a focus on private car ownership, owning a car is a necessity for a resident, however a car rental is too expensive for an intern. Traffic jams are very frequent in Dubai/Sharjah/Ajman. Getting somewhere with public transport is often impossible if not combined with taxis. Cycling is not advised because of the heat and distances. Walking is almost never an option.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

Beaches, desert (for night barbecue, safari), mountains in Ras al Khaiman, city of Al Ain in the desert. Aquaparks, restaurants...

Employer

Employer

Fun robotics,
small company that provides courses for children from the age of 7.
The courses are focused on technical skills like programming, building mechanisms, electronics and 3d modelling. The purpose is to teach children interesting technical topics in an enjoyable way.
The company is situated in the downtown Dubai.

Work description

I taught groups of students, or helped as a teacher’s assistant.
I also worked on a robot, intended for presenting the company.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

3000 AED/month

Covered aeroplane tickets, visa and accommodation, but it was not enough for food and occasional trips.

Language requirements

Since I was teaching children, English was a strong requirement.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

Provided by IAESTE United Arab Emirates, in the male dormitories of University of Sharjah.
Price 25 EAD per day.

I was one of a few interns that worked outside the university. That meant taking a bus from Sharjah University City to downtown Dubai. The bus was provided by the university and was free of charge. The commuting took from one hour to two hours, depending on the trafic. The bus took us straight to our workplace and back. If there were any changes to our schedule, we could call the driver and arrange the drive back to the university.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

Airport pickup was arranged, but I did not use it since I arrived very late in the night. I went by a taxi.
During my stay there was a number of events organized by the local committee: a trip to the mountains, trip to the desert, big dinner.

Meeting other foreign students

The other male interns lived very close, in the male dorms. Therefore, we were meeting often. The girls lived about 8 minutes away by car (taxi). So interactions with them were a bit limited.

Sport and culture

There is a sport complex in the male dormitories. It’s open for any student for free. Unfortunately for me, my working hours did not allow me to use this sport complex very often. It’s closed on Fridays, which was my only free day.

Food, local specialties

In UAE, almost everything is imported, so you can find anything you crave at the moment. Alcohol is very restricted for cultural reasons.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

Skype

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

The working days are from Sunday to Thursday. The weekend is Friday and Saturday.
Go during the winter, even September and the first half of October were too hot for any outside activities.
Everyone speaks English to some degree, so communication is not a problem.

What not to forget with you

Long trousers. I know, it’s hot, but they don’t care, shorts are frowned upon and somewhere even banned (inside the university for example)

Benefits of the internship

You will meet new people and visit the fastest growing city on the planet, full of interesting sights.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

Good, friendly, helpful.

Overall experience with IAESTE

Good
