Macau is small autonomous region of the People's Republic of China with the highest density of population in the world. It's located just one hour by ferry (166,- MOP) from Hong Kong, where you can get easily by plane. Both of these states don't require visa for European union people. There is hot weather during summer and also typhoon season (there was only two of them).

Although Macau isn't big, there are nice places and a lot of tourists mostly from Mainland China is going to visit them. There are nice streets with Portuguese architecture because of its colonial history, few Chinese temples and many casinos. Gambling is biggest business in Macau, which is 7 times bigger than Vegas.

There are many options for travelling during weekends or after internship. I spent three weekends in Hong Kong to look around the city and also for trips to nature (hiking to Sharp Peak and after that camping at the beach was awesome). We were for three days in Mainland China to visit Zhuhai and Guangzhou. China is only one country I've visited, where you need visa, but you can get it easily in border for Zhuhai area for three days (168,- RMB). Last weekend destination for me was Taipei, where we were 4 days. Others IAESTE guys also visited Vietnam, which I wasn't interested because I had been there one year before. After internship, I spent one month in the Philippines.

I was working for University of Macau, Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Electromechanical Engineering. My supervisor was Dr. Alfred Wong and I saw him just two times. We mostly communicated via Facebook. There wasn't problem to arrange days off, because of travelling. Working hours also weren't fixed.

My project was to upgrade positioning mechanism of the wheelchair by replacing pneumatic cylinders with electrical device. I chose linear actuators, mounted them to a wheelchair, did electrical connections and created software to control it.

Living costs in Macau are higher, but salary was sufficient. I have got 6400,- MOP per month, which was more than in O-form (5500,- MOP). If you want to travel a lot, you will need more money than you earn.

The requirement of English was just "good". I only had to pass interview in English at Czech IAESTE LC. I don't have any certificate. It's just maybe little bit harder to understand Chinese guys in beginnings, because of their accent.

I was living at postgraduate dormitory and it was for free! I shared the room with another IAESTE exchange student.

I had to arrive to campus on my own, but it wasn't problem. We had two beautiful dinners organised by IAESTE Macau.

I've met there another 18 IAESTE students mostly from European countries. We were good friends since beginnings. We were traveling together, organised BBQ every week and had a lot of fun.

Sports facility was awesome, there was big sport complex at the campus to use for free! About culture: we went every Thursday to the legendary club Cubic, because there was no entrance fee and drinks were also for free this day!?

Cantonese cuisine is great, especially if you visit a fancy restaurant. On the other hand food at the campus is stereotypical and you will may hate rice.

Wi-fi is available everywhere around campus.

You should safe some money on your journey to travel as much as possible.

Umbrella, raincoat, sunscreen. There isn't any bedding, so it's worthy to bring it.
