About the country

Location of the place

https://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karlsruhe

City

Karlsruhe has about 300 000 inhabitants. It is a big university city with a good conection to Strasbourg, Stuttgart, Konstanz and the Black Forest.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

Rhein valley, France, Stuttgart, Konstanz, Black Forest, Heidelberg, Freiburg. It is usual here to ride a bike.

Employer

Employer

Karlsruher Institut für Technologie, Institut for technical chemistry and polymer chemistry.

Work description

Syntesis, post-modification and characterization of MOF (molecular organic frameworks)

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

650 euro which is enough for living and also some trips. Unfortunately in case of voluntary intership the DAAD will not pay the insurances and the employer takes it from the salary. In total the insurances are about 120 euros per month.

Language requirements

Only english, german is a good help.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

240 euro/month, Iaeste - university dormitories. Eight rooms/people share a kitchen, two toilets and two showers. In each room is table, bed, wardrobe, mirror and basin.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

I arrived at Karlsruhe ralway station, IAESTE member picked me up and went with me to my place. Next day was a small trip to the town. First day of work an other IAESTE member went with me and helped me to find the right office. At the weekends there were usually some smaller or bigger events. Trip to places in surroundings, barbecue... Every Monday was a meeting in some pub.

Meeting other foreign students

In IAESTE events or also some private events with other foreign students. During the summer - special IAESTE weekends in surroudings towns.

Sport and culture

Karlsruhe is a big city, everyone can find the right opportinity for her/him.

Food, local specialties

Quite a good beer (they are used to Radlers - be careful). Food very similar to ours just their love to all kinds of sauses was in some combinations strange.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

At the dormitories is internet, unfortunatelly you need a cable. Otherwise wifi at work and on some special places in the town is free wifi.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Take a lock for a bike and tell the IAESTE members about your desire to bike as soon as posible. The tram is quite expensive (2.40 euro for one ride, 60 euros for monthly ticket). More to that every student coming to Germany should arrange that the intersip would be compulsory part of study, so he/she won't pay the insurances on his/her own.

What not to forget with you

Lock for a bike. Some small things (for example kez tags) from the Czech Republic, as well as beer if possible.

Benefits of the internship

Comunication skills in both english and german. Getting new friends and learning about foreign countries and their habbits. Of course learning new things at work.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

Great, any problem wasn't too big for them. Even with the salary they try to help as much as they could.

Overall experience with IAESTE

I was afraid but at the end I don't know why. Just go, it is a great opportunity. The people are nice in case of any trouble the employer or the Local Centre is able to help. More to that I would say you would never be able to get abroad for such a long time for such a money.

Other comments

Eventhough I didn't get the insurances from DAAD and I was missing the money the LC Karlsruhe was able to provide me some extra money. At the end I was able to enjoy the stay.
