About the country

Location of the place

Small village next to longest fjord in Norway, Sognefjord, on the west coast of Norway.

City

Vik i Sogn is a small village, around 1500 inhabitant. Village is about 3,5 hours by ferry from Bergen. This place surrounds two steep mountains and the view is just magnificent. In this village is old viking Hopperstad Stave Church from year 1130.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

Greatest fjord in Norway - Sognefjord. There is a lot of hiking possibilities with steep mountains and great views. Lovely mountains with glaciers, lakes and sheeps. This land is low crowded, so there are many places with pure nature.

Employer

Employer

Bystøl AS - company which designs small hydropower plants and some civil engineering structures with 15 employes (www.bystol.no).

Work description

Summary:
• Online paperless documentation for manufacturers and builders using Autodesk A360 and Revit
• Creating parametric families for pipeline and improving efficiency of drawings + several workshops about it for implementation using Revit
• Creating scripts for algorithmization (automatic naming of assemblies, sheets etc.) using Dynamo software
• Water construction visualizations using Photoshop

Detailed description of the work:

I tried to find the easiest way for importing the 3D model with drawings at the tablet. You can view your project in a web browser or use the A360 android app after model import. It is really useful because you don´t need a papers at your construction site – you have just the model of your structure and you can make your own sections of this model and select the components and just look at their properties. You can even see it in 3D, so it is easier to understand the drawings.

However I discovered that in the current projects were still not the properties of a components (windows, generators, pipes, etc.,…). It was only the geometry of them. So I decided make a templete for a new projects with the components, so the schedulles with the properties and quantity were generated automatically.

It took me one month to finish the most frequently used components like pipes, valves, and more pipe fittings and accessories. After this I just inserted it in the template for the new projects and made 4 workshops for the company where I described how to use these components and the template and how to make a new one.

Last three weeks I tried to use this template on two new real water intake projects. My boss gave me free rein with the design and I just consulted it with him. One project was a little bit specific because there was no road to go to this intake. So I designed it as economic as possible, because they they are planning to transport the concrete using the helicopter. I´m really happy that I participated on this projects and I think that my template will be useful for the company, too. I really enjoyed it.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

Salary is for most of the trainees the same (18 000 NOK/month + around 11% taxes). For living in the village is more than sufficient. In my company, they counted hours for the salary, so if you worked more, you could earn some extra money. For another trainees who lived in the city and travelled a lot cost : profits - 1:1 I think.

Language requirements

In whole Norway everybody speaks English well. Even old people in small villages. For my kind of work was skill of the software more important.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

Price of accomodation for 1 month was 5000,- NOK for basement apartment. Another trainees had the same price. Accomodation provided the company because local IAESTE didn´t know this village well.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

Local IAESTE members became my friends durning this internship. Communication was at a friendly level. We had a FB group and FB chat for organizing weekend events and for sending jokes and so on. One weekend they came to visit my village and some another weekends I visited them and we organized some trips (hiking, fishing in boat and so on). Pick-up at the airport in first day and good-bye party in the end. Several IAESTE weekends across whole Norway, but the places were pretty far.

Meeting other foreign students

All our events was together with another students and IAESTE members from Bergen. I lived in a village 3,5h from Bergen, so we met only on some 6 events, when I was in Bergen or they were in my village. But we are friends now and we are planning to make after-internship party in our home countries.

Sport and culture

I brought a bicycle with myself, so most of weekend I was on some trips with a bicycle. Sometimes I just left my bicycle under some steep mountain and then just hiked up. In my village was only one culture event (the rawsberry festival), but for hiking around the fjords is it the ideal place.

Food, local specialties

Norwegian cuisine is not one of the best. Traditional meal is a soap from sheep meat cubes or just with meatballs with some kind of thick bread. There is not so much restaurants, because it is expensive even for local people. So local people mostly eats only some knäckebrot or toast bread with some ham or cheese and vegetables. They have good and cheap raindear salami and salmons, tunas. If you are used to eat hot meal for lunch, you can cook some pasta and rizoto. But for czech cuisine there is not too much cheap ingredients that you mostly need. Fresh meat and vegetables is expansive but if you combine some frozen vegetables with some pasta or rice, it is not too expansive.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

You can buy Norwegian SIM card with tarif for 400,- NOK and 4 GB data - it is useful because you can have 4G internet even in the middle of nature and skype here with your family. I also had internet in my office (superfast 100 mb/s) and at my accomodation (this one had sometimes problems).

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Bring a bicycle and go out every day when is not rainy.

What not to forget with you

Bring as much useful things that you can, because in Norway is everything 3times more expensive. So hiking shoes, raincoat and another warm clothes is useful.

And some goods like alcohol are sometimes more than 5times expansive. It is a good idea to bring some sprit alcohol like becherovka as a gift.

Benefits of the internship

• Improving language skills
• Work experience
• Knowledge of new culture
• New friends from around the world
• Independence
• Discover of a great Norwegian nature

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

Norwegian IAESTE is full of friendly people and all comunication was at a friendly level. There were no troubles in comunication. When I something needed, they helped me quickly and with pleasure.

Overall experience with IAESTE

As an IAESTE member I can only recommend not only for internships. It is just a bunch of students that like to discover, work experience and have fun - they just do what they enjoy without any other profit.
