About the country

Location of the place

Basel is located on the Nord - west site of Switzerland and it is the third largest city of the country. There are very good connection to France, Germany and of course to the rest of Switzerland(Zuerich 1hour, Bern 1 hour) The only disadvantage is the distance from the Alps.( Visp – central Alps 2 – 2.5 hours) But the trains are comfortable and on time and you will love to travel by them.

City

The city itself offers to you everything you need. From the cozy old town with cafes and boutiques trough contemporary architecture, sport activities as a swimming in the Rhine, to the nigh life in pubs or industrial techno clubs.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

As I mentioned traveling in Switzerland is a pleasure. In Munhouse is also an international airport with good offers from Easy Jet. I would recommend visiting the all cantons, Switzerland is a beautiful country and its each corner is different. You can also visit the close cities in Germany or France: Freibourg, Colmar, Strasbourg…

Employer

I worked in an architecture studio Morger Partner Architekten. The office is located in the old town near to the river. There are nearly fifty architects working in teams on several projects of a different size and function.

Work description

At the beginning I worked in team on the competition, which was a nice start of the internship with a lot of creativity and pleasant working atmosphere. I also appreciated a possibility to spend the counted overtime hours for some later holidays. Afterwards I worked on construction plans for another project, prepare plans for publishing and build a huge scale model for the presentation. I was always part of a team and participating on all consultation and presentation of our projects.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

Standard salary for the interns is 2.000 – 2.500 CHF per mount (it may depend on the degree and skills). This amount of salary covers yours expense for the rent, food, traveling, parties and still you don’t need to go to the debt.

Language requirements

The official language of the office is German and they don’t accept to speak English, which can be very difficult at the beginning but I benefited it later. I would recommend at least B1-B2 level of language skills.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

During my traineeship I stayed at the small dormitory Borromaum. The monthly rent is 600 CHF. The place is close the old town and an amazing people live there.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

The local member IAESTE Vincent picked me up at the train station and showed me around. Later he invited me for BBQ and other events with his friends and other trainees. It was always really nice and I appreciated it a lot. There are occasionally official meetings organized by IAESTE Basel too. But the best experiences with the IAESTE I had by amazing weekend events organized by different local centers around the Switzerland. I have met there wonderful people and have a lot of good memories.

Meeting other foreign students

The best opportunity to meet other trainees is applaing for the IAESTE events or simply follow the IAESTE facebook group, it is full of events organized by trainees themselves.

Sport and culture

You can provide all kind of winter and summer sports in Switzerland. For me there was a new experience with Rhein swimming during my lunch Break or biggest Europe’s bungee jumping from Verzasca dam in Ticino. For architects there is a famous Kunstmuseum, Vitra Design Museum and Swiss Architecture Museum and lot of events such as exhibitions, lectures and concerts available in Basel.

Food, local specialties

Typical food for Switzerland is cheese. All kind of cheese, Fondue, Racklette … you can find it all on the traditional autumn Basler Herbsmesse.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

You will appreciate good German skills but it is not necessary for some companies. You can save some money by shopping in Weil am Rhein in Germany (tram 8). Buy halb tax SBB for traveling by train as soon as possible, you will travel for half prices.

What not to forget with you

Adapter for swiss electrical plugers. Pass photos for official documents (Auslanderausweis, SBB Halb Tax).

IAESTE internship in Switzerland is surely one of the best experiences I've ever had. It combined the internship in one of the leading architecture studios in Switzerland and an amazing social life and adventure events organized by IAESTE community. This memories will stay in my heart forever.
