About the country

Location of the place

All interns are working and staying at the university campus.

City

Juja is small town around 30km NE from Nairobi. There is everything you need so when you want to go to Nairobi, it is around 1 hour to get there. But there is nothing extra special to see anyway :)
Everywhere are only dustroads so be prepared for dust everywhere :D

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

In Kenya there is many things to see. Wild nature, mountains, even trip to Nairobi is pretty deep experience.

Employer

Employer

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology is a big university for about 20 000 students. All interns were working somewhere in the campus (labs etc.).
Whole campus is pretty OK but some facilities are getting old and doesn't look really nice.

Work description

Well in destription there was written "Designing and building low-cost houses." but in fact I was helping with teaching. I am doing the same in Czech Republic so they were glad I can participate on that.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

Well it is enough for living in Juja but when you want to travel you have to be ready to pay much more. Especially as an expat you have to pay much more for everything and it is really annoying.
Salary was 17 000KSH which is around 170 USD and one weekend in Masai Mara cost 14500 (guide, trip, accomodation etc.) + 9 900 entrance fee for 2 days.

Language requirements

Absolutely any problem. When you are able to at least speak it is all right.
Hakuna matata - no worries.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

It was provided by IAESTE. All interns live in a small staff houses. It is OK just, again, houses looks a bit used.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

There is many IAESTE members who are willing to meet new friends.

Meeting other foreign students

Every year there is group around 10 ppl, mostly from Germany so if you want to practice your German this is the right place :)

Sport and culture

There is a few possibilities in the campus (gym, fotball pitch etc.) but nothing special.

Food, local specialties

Food is cheap and pretty good. Rice, beans, vegetable was my common meal. Also there is a special thing - salt pancake called "chapati" and that is awesome!

Also fruit and vegetable is absolutely amazing! So tasty and cheap. Avocado for 20 cents, banana for 5 (6 resp. 1.5 CZK).

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

No problem. 3G is almost everywhere and SIM card with data is cheap.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Definitely worth to see Kenya!

What not to forget with you

Warm clothes (seriously). There are really big differences between day and night.

Benefits of the internship

Completely differend world, culture and environment.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

IAESTE is part of the Alumni and International Students Office (ALISO) office and people are there for a whole day s no problem.
Also there is many students from IAESTE who are very interested in meeting new people.

Overall experience with IAESTE

No problem, everything was OK.

Other comments

Be prepared there is so many rubbish everywhere.
The most useful clothes color is brown. You can not see dust on it! :D

Have enough of money.
- 1 day trip to some national park cost around 100 USD.
- Masai Mara weekend cost 300USD.
- Mt. Kenya 4 days trip cost around 500USD (unfortunately it was in the same weekend when I left).
All turism is really expensive but on the other hand... It definitely worth to see it!
