About the country

Location of the place

Hungary is a landlocked country in Central Europe. It is bordered by Slovakia to the north, Ukraine and Romania to the east, Serbia and Croatia to the south, Slovenia to the southwest and Austria to the west. Hungary is a member of the European Union, NATO, the OECD, the Visegrád Group, and the Schengen Area. The official language is Hungarian, but in Budapest, English is also spoken in many places.

City

Budapest is the capital and the largest city of Hungary. It is the Hungary's main political, cultural, commercial, and industrial centre. Budapest had 1.74 million inhabitants, and it is is divided into two parts (Buda and Pest), separated by the popular river Danube. It is a lovely and welcoming city, with so much activities especially during summer. Great food, Great weather, Great people.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

The scenery is lovely, with so much to see and do. Great sporting activities, wine tasting, and much more.

Hungary is a predominantly rural country, one-fifth covered in forests. The Great Plain, especially the area around Kecskemét and the Kiskunság National Park, offers some of the best horse-riding in Europe as well as fantastic horse-shows during the summer.

Cycling is very well provided for: cycling maps with recommended routes, and bikes can be rented in most towns at reasonable prices. Particularly scenic cycling routes can be found in the vineyard-covered hills around the Badacsony, where cycling routes run alongside the small winding roads. There are also plenty of hiking opportunities in Hungary; walks in the Badacsony region offer stunning views over Lake Balaton.

Employer

KNORR-BREMSE KFT.

!The office is located in Major út 69, 1119 Budapest, Hungary. The colleagues that I had to work with were very nice and helpful. The Knorr-Bremse staff in my department were mostly full staff, Hungarian, with two Hungarian interns, each having different specialties.

Knorr-Bremse is a manufacturer of braking systems for rail and commercial vehicles that has operated in the field for over 100 years. Other products in Group's portfolio include intelligent door systems, control components, air conditioning systems for rail vehicles, and torsional vibration dampers, transmission control systems for commercial vehicles. In 2013, the Group's workforce of over 20,000 achieved worldwide sales of EUR 4.3 billion. The Group has over 90 locations in 27 countries. It was founded in 1905 in Berlin, Germany, and had am estimated revenue of €4.3 billion (2013) and the number of employees are 19,120 (as of Dec 31, 2012).

Work description

The department I was attached to was named the PC Software Development team where they mainly focused on developing software for the Braking system such as LABCAR IV.

During my internship at Knorr-Bremse, I worked on multiple tasks, projects and activities. The Knorr-Bremse projects and activities can be divided into daily tasks that involve programming, database management, testing, and customer communication, that had to be conducted at varying times.

The stipulated work hours were 8 hours every day, but in my department, my boss requires minimum 7 regular work hours and most times, I worked more, depending on the target for the week, and what I have achieved so far.

Daily tasks and activities (routine) from October-December 2013

1. System architecture building
2. Documenting the architecture
3. Using Redmine software to manage projects
4. Working with the MKS Integrity client and inputting requirements for the design into the system

Daily tasks and activities (routine) from January to May 2014

1. Reviewing user requirements
2. Translating the requirements into design
3. Writing PHP, HTML, and SQL codes based on user requirements
4. Testing the software
5. Reporting Bugs and issues in the Redmine web based project management system
6. Writing the reports for the team and updating the Redmine project database.

The tasks and projects that I have worked on during my internship can be divided into the following 5 work areas:
• Architecture planning
• PHP and HTML Scripting
• SQL Database coding
• Project Management, and
• Configuration management (very minimal) These have all been described above.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

Yes, it was - For me.

Budapest is a fairly cheap place to live depending on your lifestyle. If you don't go out much, then the income is just exactly sufficient, nothing extra to save. But, if you do party a lot. Not so. :d

Language requirements

English Language.
German a plus.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

By IAESTE Committee representative in Budapest.

Initial accommodation I got was about 250 euros and the stipend from Educa International was really helpful when I had to settle down and i had so much expenses.

After a while, I got another apartment for 100 Euros per month. (This was really cheap, and it was courtesy of Bela Kitajka in Budapest)

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

A member of the IAESTE Committee picks you up, at the airport or at the bus station and usually, accommodation is already prepared before you get to Budapest, so you are taken directly to the hostel or flat.
The team in Budapest did a great job of helping everyone.

Meeting other foreign students

Meetings and activities are organized (Parties too :d)
So, everyone can meet each other, exchange contacts and all, but there is also a facebook page, so people share contents, invite others to events, and generally have a good time.

Sport and culture

They have great sporting events such as the city wide long distance running and cycling, or the lake balaton swimming and boat races - really cool events too on Margit Island. the culture is nice and welcoming, people love to drink and have fun - A LOT. They try to help Strangers and try to speak English when they realize you dont speak Hungarian.

Food, local specialties

One of the popular local specialty I remember was the goulash. There were many others too, but restaurants abound everywhere. Budapest is a tourist centre, so if you are in the city centre for instance at Kalvin Street, you would find lots of places to eat. Usually, for lunch there is the daily menu and this differs from organization to organization. it goes for around 700-1000 HUF per day.. The Hungarians love spicy food, so if you are a spice lover, theres your chance to eat as much spice.

I remember once, during a team building event, after Frisbee, we had drinks, and they loved spice so much, my colleagues put lots of hot paprika into beer and started drinking it... :d :d

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

Yes.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

1. Try to get a flat around your office. Since you are still studying, you need extra time to study (or work on your thesis) as I did, so if your house is close to your office, you save some time you would have spent in the tram or train - However, Budapest is a well networked place in terms of transportation.

2. Network with your colleagues at work and also other interns. You always hear about opportunities this way, and you might get retained if you know if they need to hire someone.. There is a guy from South America who networked really well, and after his internship, he was called back and offered a job. (I did a poor job of this, hence my advice :)

3. Have fun!

What not to forget with you

Your Office and personal ID, Passport and Cell Phone (with some call credit, of course).

Some cash or Card - you can open a bank account if you would stay for a long time, if not, dont bother. I used OTP, but you can try others. The charges are similar anyways.

Benefits of the internship

The months of my internship have been very instructive for me. Knorr-Bremse has offered me opportunities to learn and develop myself in many areas. I gained a lot of experiences, especially in the software development, database, and project management field. A lot of the tasks and activities that I have worked on during my internship are similar to what I studied during my Bachelors and what I am studying at the university for my Masters degree. This gave me the opportunity to find out which areas I want work in after my degree. The area that I found most interesting is project management & IT and business analysis. Before my internship, I had ideas from my study and previous work areas and I was able to build on these areas during my internship and it was definitely an introduction to the actual work field for me.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

I know some companies and outlets actually have some cooperation with IAESTE, but I cannot really give names as I am not sure.

Overall experience with IAESTE

It was great!

Everything was well organized and planned, attention to detail was given and it was just reallly cool.

If i had to do it again, I would stay longer!

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE UNIVERSITY

I would recommend that the university develop more partnerships with organizations to help students who want internships get this faster without stress. This is because most of my classmates who went for internship had to struggle with finding a placement for a long time, and although, the school had links on the webpage, some are old, and some of the companies there do not exist anymore, so this could be improved upon. Without IAESTE, I would not have had this great opportunity, and the University should try to work on this. :)
