About the country

Location of the place

China is the most populous country in the world and one the biggest country in the world. It offers a big diversity in culture, nature and language. Great place for development of undestanding, patience and so on.

City

Shanghai is metropolitan city where live around 25 Milion people. In downtown, western restaurants and clubs are possible to meet western people. Public transport, sightseeing places are crowded otherwise it´s really nice place to spend your internship. You can be in the downtown and still find calm and peaceful area, e.g. in parks (Century Park).

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

China offers many cities and national parks worth to see.
Amazing weekend trips are Beijing with Great Wall, Xian, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Zhangjiajae.
Shanghai itself offers many places to visit and even 3 months aren´t enough to explore all beauties of Shanghai. Especially night walks in Shanghai are priceless. Places worth to see are Qibao, Chongming island, Sheshan mountains and Suzhou.

Employer

Employer

Celestica is international company. It employs around 28 000 people all around the world. In Shanghai is placed research and development of centre of network switches, storage systems and blade servers. Local office offers amazing work enviroment.

Work description

I worked in Thermal Engineering Department. I helped one coworker. Half of internship, I spent in the lab helping him with setting of devices for measurments and then analyzing gained data. Second half was focused on creating models and then their thermal simulation (software FloTHERM).

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

2000 RMB. It covers basic expenses (food, public transport). Trips must be covered from own savings.

Language requirements

Company required Excellent English. Good English is enough because not many coworkers speak English well.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

Company provided good accommodation for free. I was sharing apartment with another 2 guys and everyone had own room. Only little problem was with beds which were hard ( standard in China).

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

One IAESTE member picked me up at the airport and took me to the hostel because I arrived sooner.
IAESTE China organises LEPA programme where they desribe life in China, opportunity to meet other trainees. Idea of programme is nice but I dont recommend to take hotel which is provided by IAESTE. It makes LEPA overpriced. It is better to arrange own accommodation.

IAESTE organises some trips but I traveled on my own with other trainees.

Meeting other foreign students

I was meeting other trainees every week. We had dinner together and as well we traveled together around China.

Sport and culture

Shanghai offers many culture and sport events.

Food, local specialties

Chinese cuisene offers reach scale of taste from really spice meals to super sweet or salty. Chinese street food stalls or in canteens cost around 15-30 RMB. Western food costs comparable to Prague.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

If you want to communicate with people out of China, it is necessary to have VPN otherwise Facebook, WhatsApp and so on do not work. Chinese use for communication WeChat.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

You have to try Yangs dumplings. Go for a night walk around Shanghai ( nearby Chinese Art Museum, Century park, Xintiandi, West Nanjing road). Chinese people appears shy in the beginning but when they feel comfortable with you, they are able to talk about anything.

What not to forget with you

VPN, a bit of patience and money to explore amazing China.
What you have to forget is prejudice.

Benefits of the internship

I saw life in one of the biggest city in the world. I got experience with chinese culture and how people work and think there.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

Apart from preparing documents for VISA, LEPA programme and Christmas dinner, I didnt meet any IAESTE member during my internship. IAESTE is located in Shanghai but they did not meet us, they just organised trips where some of them appeared.

Overall experience with IAESTE

Without problems.
