Monika Boxanová, CTU Prague,
ročník 5About the country
Location of the place
Almaty is located in southern Kazakhstan, directly below the Tian-Shan Mountains and close to the Kyrgyzstan border.
City
Almaty is the largest city of Kazakhstan, has nearly 2 million inhabitants and is beautiful at second sight. It has large boulevards, plenty of restaurants to eat and functional city transport. Useful apps: 2gis for public city transport and Y.Taxi for taxi. Taxi car are really cheap.
Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
To the south of the city there are high mountains, where you can go on trips with beautiful views. Within 300 km there is a steppe, Singing dune, colorful rocks, canyon and mountain lakes.
Employer
Employer
Al-farabi Kazakh University, physics department
Work description
Analysis of materials using lasers. I did one experiment.
Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)
I got a schollarship. I was around 40 000 Tenge for a month. Enough for food, travel must be paid for by your own.
Language requirements
Most people in Kazakhstan speak fluent Russian, the younger generation speaks English. They spoke basic English in my lab.
Accommodation (price, who provided it)
I lived in a student dormitory, accommodation was free. In the room we were two girls, we had a private bathroom. The kitchen was shared for all rooms.
Social life
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
A worker from my lab picked me up at the airport. At the university there is a lady named Assel who will help with all the problems. She is also willing to arrange trips for trainees.
Meeting other foreign students
Most of the other trainees lived in the same dormitory, so there was no problem meet them.
Sport and culture
There is a large sports field on the university campus, the other trainees went to play volleyball. For myself I recommend going to the mountains.
Food, local specialties
In Kazakhstan people eat a lot of meat, most commonly mutton. The national dish is horse meat. I recommend tasting plov (rice with carrots and meat), kurdak (meat with potatoes), shashlik (grilled meat on skewers). If you like meat, you will be satisfied. There is a dining room in the university library where it cooks well everyday for a good price. Food meal cost 30-60 CZK.
Other information
Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic
I mainly communicated over the Internet. Buy a sim card, for a few money one has 10Gb of data. The dorm had functional wifi.
Recommendations for students who will go to the same place
Learn the basics of Russian, get an international driver's license and rent a car. Kazakhstan is a beautiful country and it is a shame not to see it, just because I have no way to get there. By night-train you can easily get to Nur-Sultan (Astana).
What not to forget with you
Shoes to the mountains.
Benefits of the internship
Getting to know the beautiful country. Traveling and mountains! I traveled a lot alone (without problems). I didn't work much in the lab, so the work experience is minimal.
Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country
Without problems.
Overall experience with IAESTE
Positive, but I organized trips independently.
