About the country

Location of the place

My internship was placed in Turkey, in city of Istanbul.

City

I stayed in Istanbul, which is a beautiful and huge city. It is full of sights and friendly people. The city centre is very crowded but other parts have amazing atmosphere and are good for chilling, exploring, having a beer, getting lost. The culture is so different that you always find something new for the eye.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

From Istanbul I made several trips. One was to Cappadocia, which took 12 hours by bus, but it was totally worth it to see hot air balloons over the stone towers. Other one was to Izmir, which took 9 hours and was noce as well. From Izmir I went to a seaside for a swim which was beautiful.

Employer

Employer

My employer was an old wise architect with big heart. He was very keen to teach me stuff not only about architecture but also about Turkish culture. Which I found fascinating. He earned my respect and I am very much grateful how much time and effort he gave into my internship.

Work description

I was in architectural studio, my tasks therefore were designing from residential buildings to hotel rooms. I also was designing optical centre and university. The first week my colleagues spent teaching me new program which I did not know very well.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

Salary was 1200 turkish liras per month which covered all my food expenses. Not accommodation though, not trips and not plane tickets.

Language requirements

Everyone more or so spoke good english. My english is very good but someone with leve B2 would manage as well.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

Accommodation was provided by Iaeste and was 1000 turkish liras per month. Was in the girl dorm at university. Not fancy, not cozy but I had a bed and desk and bathroom.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

I met first IAESTE member at the airport in Istanbul, who was nice, full of useful information, helpful and he helped to get to my dorms. My other IAESTE mentor was real cool guy, helpful with everything and very nice and friendly. All the others I met for a breath moment were super nice as well.

Meeting other foreign students

It was a nice experience meeting other fellow interns. From different contries. They all were chiiled and nice. And it was fun. I made some friends for life.

Sport and culture

Since Istanbul is huge city getting from work to home takes lot of time. So there is no more time for sport activities. But in the university campus, where I stayed were lot of possibilities to do sports. From volleyball to football to running etc. I went climbing to boulder center a lot.

Food, local specialties

Turkish food is very much similar to greek ones. So I highly recommended. It is full of good vegetables and good meat and even healthy. Was a delight to eat it every day. Egg plant is almost n everything and tomatoes and rice and beef.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

I bought a sim card to communicate with my family back home. It cost me 100 turkish liras with big amount of data which I used for 2 months.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Save money before hand for trips. Learn some turkish words, basic phrases because Turkish people are the most hospitable people I have ever met. I f you show them some respect to their country they will try as much as possible to help you out.

What not to forget with you

DO not forget umbrella. When it rains in Istanbul it is a downpour.

Benefits of the internship

Experience in a work-field, communication with people from Iran, Kuwait . Getting to know different way of thinking and learning new communication skills.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

Absolutely smooth. No problems at all and very friendly. Mostly done on whatsapp.

Overall experience with IAESTE

Five stars out of five. Everything was perfect. Every IASTE member is trying to do their best.
