About the country

Location of the place

Osijek is the centre of Croatian Slavonia - located east from Zagreb. Disadvantage of the place is that it´s not close to the sea, on the other hand it´s much cheaper than by the sea ;-)

City

Osijek is quite small city - from dorm where I lived it was about 30 minutes to the city centre by walk. I worked in the lab at the University of Osijek situated in the same campus like dormitory. Student canteen was in the Campus - opened till mid of July. Shop was about 10 minutes walk, bakery was close...

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

It´s possible to go during weekend to the seaside (Zadar, Rijeka...) or e.g. to visit Plitvice lakes, Zagreb etc.
It´s possible to rent a car in Osijek and it´s also cheaper when you have full car (international driving license isn´t problem as well).

Work description

synthesis of MOFs (metal-organic frameworks), I synthetised sulphide-based peroskvites with metal and organic ligand.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

800 kn per week - for dorm and food it´s sufficient but if you want to do some trips, saved money necessary. Money is paid monthly and on the rebound, just last payment is little bit in advance.

ask IAESTE members about other trainees or ERASMUS students in Osijek and their contact (facebook etc.)

Sport and culture

church of St. Peter and Paul, museums, Osijek ZOO, pedestrian bridge across the river, beach in the riverside, swimming pool outside, gocarts, bowling in Portanova (shopping centre), cinema...

Food, local specialties

Ajvar (sauce), Pleskavica, Cevapi (meat), Graševina (wine)...

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

don´t hesitate, it´s not by the sea but it´s unforgettable experience and great place to stay and be patient - every administration stuff is very slow in Croatia but everything works out at the end ;-)

In conclusion, if you are considering going for an internship abroad or ERASMUS, you should go. It´s a great experience for you and also a great item for your CV. It´s not always so great as everyone says, sometimes it´s difficult to solve everything on your own but it´s worth it!
