About the country

Location of the place

São Paulo is the biggest city that I have never visited.

City

To move around in São Paulo, you usually need to use Uber because the city is very large and the public transportation is not as good as in Prague.
Brazilian people are very kind and friendly.
I stayed in São Paulo and tried to visit all the tourist attractions, but even after two months I didn’t have enough time to see everything.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

I stayed in São Paulo, but I visited the main museum (for MASP, you need to book your ticket online).
I also visited the parks, the zoo, the city center, and enjoyed some parties on Paulista Avenue.
The other international interns went on a trip to Rio de Janeiro.

Employer

Employer

I worked for SENAI, a research center for engineering in Brazil. I enjoyed working there because the other people in the lab were very nice to me. The only problem was that the job description did not match the tasks I actually did at SENAI. I think it is a large Brazilian company.

Work description

The job description on the O-form was not the same as the work I actually did at SENAI. I worked on coffee, comparing different samples according to specific characteristics.
This experience will be interesting for my career because I want to work abroad, and this internship shows that I am able to work anywhere in the world.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

I received 4,000 R$ per month.
For me, it was enough to live in São Paulo.

Language requirements

Only a few people at SENAI spoke English. In my lab, just two girls could speak it, and all the protocols were in Portuguese. Outside SENAI, not many people speak English either. Fortunately, since I speak French, I was able to understand a little Portuguese. However, the best way to come here is to have at least a basic knowledge of Portuguese.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

I paid 900 euros for my entire stay. My flat was not the best, but it was good enough to live in for two months. I asked IAESTE Brazil to arrange accommodation for me, but in the end, I had to book an Airbnb by myself just two days before my arrival. I lived alone.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

I was picked up at the airport by someone from IAESTE, but I know that other interns went to their accommodations by themselves.
I did not attend the organized meetings because I spent my time meeting Brazilian people, and whenever there was a meeting, I was with my friends.

Meeting other foreign students

We attended some parties together with the other international students.

Sport and culture

I sometimes rode my bike in the park, and I also visited the zoo and museums.

Food, local specialties

I really loved all the foods and drinks in Brazil, except for feijoada, because one day it contained pork ears.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

I mainly used WhatsApp to communicate with my friends in Czechia.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Brazil, and São Paulo in particular, is not as dangerous as it is often shown in movies or as your family might say.
However, be careful with your bank card, because my debit card sometimes did not work in all places.

What not to forget with you

Take euros to exchange for local currency, because I’m not sure that Czech koruna (CZK) will be accepted to get Brazilian reais (R$).
Also, bring an electric plug adapter.

Benefits of the internship

I gained more international experience and was able to develop my professional network.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

It was okay.

Overall experience with IAESTE

My overall experience with IAESTE was good, although there were some minor issues, such as with the accommodation.
