About the country

Location of the place

Belgium is a small European country known for its delicious food, medieval cities, and role in the European Union.
Gent is a lively Belgian city with canals, historic buildings, and a large student population.
The city offers a unique mix of rich history and modern culture. In is in the Flanders region so they speak Holland.

City

Ghent
cycling, trams are expensive, you can cycle anywhere and the infrastructure is amazing. Smaller city but big enough. Nice people, everyone helpfull, I did not see any crime and I felt safe all the time. Big student city.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

Brussels, Paris, Antwerps, Lille, Luxembourg. Amsterdam, Brugges, Haag, Rotterdam, Delft, so much opportunities and the train can take you almost anywhere. There was a big group of interns in Ghent so you could easily plan anything together.

I really enjoyed working there.

Work description

I was programming tasks that I have got from my supervisor. It was working on a webapp, Half of my internship I worked on a transaction ledger for example. It was what it was told on the O-form backend and frontend work.
Normal programming work.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

Yes 500/week was enough. For example this amount of payment was sufficient for eating, paying for dormitory, travelling every on week-ends, and shopping (both for food and basic clothes).

Language requirements

Everyone in Belgium speaks English. Even older ones.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

I find a place myself, I did not ask for help. 570euro/month for a student room in shared students house. It was a good price and I was in a city center. I found it on ghents website. But I was lucky.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

We had summer reception a lot, almost every weekend we had events. It was soo nice. Thanks a lot for that, Gent IAESTE members were so nice.

Meeting other foreign students

I meet with them on others IAESTE events. We went for drink so many times.

Sport and culture

Gent offers so much music events it was great. Genste festival in summer is great.
Gyms are available but expensive.

Food, local specialties

Beef stew, FRIES everywhere, Belgium chocolate, waffles lot of food option everywhere we also had a restarant in the office. Local drinks and a lot of types of beers. This is a beer country.
Meal in restaurant about 17-20 euros, fastfoods could be 10E, depends on what you want, kebabs for 8E.
Fries for 2-3 euros, waffles about 4euros
