About the country

Location of the place

Tunis is a big city, compared to the cities in the Czech Republic it is much poorer and it shows, there is often a lot of garbage on the ground, houses in bad condition, etc. But there are richer parts of the city that are much nicer.
My overall impression of the city is very good, the people are nice, friendly, the food on the streets is very good and cheap, lots of small shops with everything you need, lots of places to go in the centre and I've never been afraid of being robbed or anything, there are also no homeless people at all.

City

none

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

Sport climbing areas around the town of Zahuan.

Employer

Employer

Small company Biminge, all colleagues very friendly and helpful, relaxed work in the office.

Work description

Most of the time I sat in my office and drew the HVAC in cad software. Occasionally solved things with the supervisor, what would be the best way to do, how to proceed etc. Apart from the cad, I was also looking up different values in different spreadsheets and doing basic calculations in a preset excel to know the dimensions of the ducts I would then draw.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

No, maybe if I really saved a lot, didn't go anywhere, that would probably be enough.

Language requirements

English was almost enough but only in the office and when communicating with iaeste members and other interns. The main language is the Tunisian version of Arabic (Faster and much influenced by French) and French. So on the street, in a taxi, in a restaurant, in a shop and often at work I didn't understand anyone or anything.
In my nomination the languages listed were English and German. v I don't understand why German at all, I haven't met anyone who speaks German during my stay. It's probably a mistake and probably should have listed French, which is spoken by most of the people there.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

The accommodation was arranged by Iaeste and I didn't have to arrange anything at all. It was slightly punk but it didn't matter, it was very cheap which was great. The main advantage of the accommodation was that we were all international students living in one apartment building with a common room, so we were always together and had a great time.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)

Pick up at the airport was without any problem, they explained and showed me everything. During the week we went to work and almost every weekend we went on a trip. Iaeste organized small events sometimes during the week, a walk to an interesting part of town, a party in the common room, etc. The trips were very nicely organized and very relaxing.

Meeting other foreign students

All of us interns lived in one apartment building with a common room, so we were always together and had a good time.

Sport and culture

Free gym, some places you can go running, climbing gym, old city centre, cartage ruins ...

Food, local specialties

The food in Tunisia is great, apart from the chips and bread they give with almost everything it looks pretty healthy too. Everything is pretty spicy though.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

I had internet connection via mobile network, coverage is very good everywhere in the city but speed is absolutely terrible.

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

If you have a hard time with the heat, think carefully if you really want to go there.

What not to forget with you

Warm winter coat

Benefits of the internship

Everything is very relaxed, nobody is rushing anywhere, everything is cheaper.

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

Great

Overall experience with IAESTE

Great
