About the country
Location of the place
Tokyo is the largest city in the world, so the first impressions were pretty scary, but I got comfortable very quickly since people are very friendly around here.
City
I was working in Shibuya, which is one of the main centres in Tokyo, so there was huge variety of restaurants, shops... The most known is the Hachiko statue and Shibuya sky viewpoint. Other than that you can take a train and visit so many places, out of which I visited Enoshima and Kawagoe with IAESTE students. My company even managed to pay for a business trip to Sapporo in Hokkaido!
Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
Hokkaido for cooler weather and amazing nature.
Enoshima for amazing views.
Odawara for the most beautiful black sand beach.
Meiji Jingu as the most known shrine.
Tokyo Skytree the highest building in Tokyo.
Sensjo-ji as the main temple of Tokyo.
Yokohama and Minatomirai.
You have to experience the otter petting!!

Tokyu railways was part of Tokyu corporation which is one of the largest companies in Tokyo, which owns quite big portion of city's real estates and skyscrapers. The company operates southern part of Tokyo railways (mostly the line from Shibuya to Yokohama). Everyone was very kind to me and even tough only a few people could speak english, we always made sure that we understood each other (try using dictating in DeepL application). I switched many sections of the company (Facility section, Facility project section, Architecture section, Civil engineering section, Rail track maintenance section etc.)
Work description
I went around sections and they explained detailly their work and projects, after that we went to sites so I could see the projects in real life, not just paper. Every section was very interested in my country design and systems how it works. So we had a discussions on many topics. I made some presentations and then presented it in front of the whole company. I learned many new things not just on the engineering side, but also some of the soft skills like quick and right communication.
Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)
I was payed 80 000 yen per month which was sufficient for me, because I had almost no expenses. Company payed for the dormitory expenses, I had free breakfast and dinner at the dormitory and they gave me 200 free ride tickets so I did not spend my own money commuting (which is quite expensive in my opinion). Plus they gave me a PASMO card with 500 yen on it.
Language requirements
English was overall enough. Japanese people tend to understand what you are saying but are not that good in replying back, but my tutor spoke english very well so when there were any issues I could always reach out to him.
Accommodation (price, who provided it)
The accommodation was at the company dormitory and was for free. I had my own room (shared with no one else) and they prepared new bed sheets for the whole period of my stay. AC was also there. I lived there with another 40 young people (aged 22-25) which were undergoing a training at the company, so we had a great time there. Breakfast and dinner was included.
Social life
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
IAESTE student picked me up at Keisei Ueno station which is about 1,5 hours train ride from Narita airport.
IAESTE students then organized 2 events: trip to Enoshima and Kawagoe where we mainly focused on the life and surroundings there, going to local shrines, trying local food etc.

Meeting other foreign students
We've sometimes met each other and went to the city centre and went to local sites, tried some food and drinks. With one student we went to Hakone for a weekend to see some of the local nature and have a great view of mount Fuji.
Sport and culture
My company held a softball tournament which was very fun!
Food, local specialties
Food is very cheap here, you will always make it under 1 500 yen which is very pleasant. My most favourite was tempura, tsukemen, sushi and katsudon.
Other information
Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic
Communication with Czech republic was not necessary as there were no problems. But whatsapp worked best for me.
Recommendations for students who will go to the same place
Do not get scared the first time you get off the plane, most people can understand english and if not just use translator app (DeepL). See some videos on how to buy tickets at ticket machines as it is quite confusing.
What not to forget with you
Umbrella as it rains quite a lot. Make sure to have a lot of water with you as it tends to get very hot and you will seat a lot. Some shops accept only cash or only card so make sure you have both. Sunscreen is a must. Google maps is the best tool for searching train/bus routes.
Benefits of the internship
I see it very lucky that I did not need to spend any money as the company basically payed for everything (even a Shinkansen ride when we went to Maebashi.
Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country
We mostly used whatsapp for communication and it worked fine. They responded pretty fast.
Overall experience with IAESTE
IAESTE Japan has many students and everyone was very kind and helpful in times of need. Only negative I can say is that I could see ourselves having one more trip somewhere with them and having some other activity than site visits and all you can eat dinner.
