- Kateřina Valešová, Brno University of Technology,
ročník 3About the country
Location of the place
Jordan is very interesting country, it is around 1000 meter above sea and it is very dry land. Amman is big city full of people and everything and everybody are very loud.
City
I was in the capital city which is called Amman. I think the most interesting thing in Amman is Downtown and it is really fun to be there with some people from Jordan of Arab people because they will show you everything. There is lot of nice places to visit like Citadele, Roman theater or King Abdullah I Mosque.
Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
Our first trip was to Jerash and there are really nice Greco-roman sights. We also visit Salt and there you can see really nice sunsets. We visit dead sea nad hot springs close to the dead sea and dead sea is really memorably place. We also were in Aquaba twice, because this is only city near to the sea. And the most beautiful places were Petra and Wadi Rum, if I had chance to visit only one place in Jordan it will have been definitely Wadi rum.
Employer
Employer
My employer was Jordan university a I was working here in some architecture studio. I'm not sure but I think it big company and the architecture department was smaller.
Work description
I work from home because in the office wasn't working place for interns and I was going to the work 1-2 a week to show my boss work I did. And they gave my a MasterPlan and I had to choose which building I want to design. I chose to desing a sport center.
Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)
I get around 150 JD which is really bad but I was there for the experience not for the money. Maybe it is enough for food if you are not eating out.
Language requirements
I survived only with english but it is always better to have some arabic speaking person because in work it was difficult only with english. But If they were speaking english I understand them easily.
Accommodation (price, who provided it)
Accomodation was paid by IAESTE. We stayed in the hotel which was pretty nice and close to everything and all interns lived in the same place.
Social life
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
IAESTE members were always helpful, they pick us up at the airport, help us with everything and they organized really nice thee days trip.
Meeting other foreign students
We lived in same hotel so we were meeting each other every time and we were always doing something together.
Sport and culture
Sport is not a thing jordan, we were going to the gym sometimes but the gyms was always full of men. Basically all the sport activities are divided to men a women. And culture is very different, it is good to make some research about what to wear and how to act.
Food, local specialties
I try many local dishes, but I'm pretty sure none of us will want to eat Shawerma for at least a year because we ate it almost every day. I really liked Kibbeh or Baba ganoush and If you visited Jordan you have to try Mansaft this is very famous dish. All the food isvery different so basically everything was new for me. And maybe is good to know, the don't eat pork.
Other information
Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic
I didn't need to communicate with IAESTE in Czech republic during my internship. But now I communicate with them by email and the communication is great.
Recommendations for students who will go to the same place
Do some research about culture and how to act and what to wear and say. Bring a lots of long clothes with you, this is not place for shorts. And don't be shy and try to make as many friends as possible.
What not to forget with you
long trousers, sunscreen, hoodie (evenings are cooler than you expect), swimsuits, hat, maybe mug or some kitchen stuffs and lot of energy
Benefits of the internship
New friends around the world and it looks cool in CV haha.
Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country
It was great, I have nothing more to say.
Overall experience with IAESTE
It was probably the best experience in my life and I probably plan to go with IAESTE next summer as well. I definitely recommend it, and specially Jordan is amazing.
Student's website
I don't have any.
