MsC Aneta Myšková, UCT Prague,
ročník 5About the country
Location of the place
The whole campus is located outside of the city (1 hour cab drive to Jaipur), so it is not very easy to get to the centre by yourself. But on the other hand, the campus is very big and you can find everything you need there. There are many restaurants, gym, sports courts and grocery stores.
City
The university is close to Jaipur. It is a beautiful city with rich Indian history, many sights and an amazing atmosphere. We have visited a lot of places in India, but Jaipur was the prettiest. You can find thousand of local shops there, people are selling species, traditional clothes, local drinks and good food, while monkeys are running around. It it definitely worth visiting.
Surroundings (possible trips, ...)
There were many trips organized by IAESTE group from Manipal University. We have been to Delhi, Agra (to see Taj Mahal), we went to the Himalayas, which was super cool. We visited an elephant orphanage, you can feed, wash and walk with elephants there (it is called Elefantastic). There are other nice town like Jodhpur, Udaipur or Ajmer.
Employer
Employer
I worked at the Manipal University in Jaipur in the Bioscience department under the associate professor Dr. Nitesh Kumar Poddar. He was very demanding, he wanted me to work 24/7, but he was very helpful with everything and I could rely on him in every kind of situation.
Work description
The work was almost the same, as was mentioned in the O-form. I was supposed to work on my own research paper. It was alright, but quite boring. I was not in the lab, not even once.
Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)
The salary was 5000 Indian rupees. In the O-form it was mentioned that the amount is sufficient for the local conditions. But it is not. The amount we needed a month was about 15-20k Indian rupees.
Language requirements
English is enough. I would not recommend going there with your English level lower than C1. You need to communicate all the time and especially their English is not very good with a funny accent (the older people), so you need to focus a lot to understand the meaning of the sentence. All the young people have perfect English.
Accommodation (price, who provided it)
The accommodation was provided by the university and we did not pay for it. The rooms were ok, not a 5* hotel, but it was alright. Just be ready for cold water only and lizards living in your room. I shared my room with one intern from Poland.
Social life
Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organized events...)
The IAESTE group was waiting for me at the airport, the were super nice from the beggining, very helpful with the money exchange, SIM card purchase and everything. They organized many trips for us. There were small issues with the communication between us, so I guess they need to learn to to coordinate a group of other people, but we managed to set everything right at the end. We also organized many trips by ourselves.
Meeting other foreign students
There were 12 foreign student from all around the world. Everyone was were nice, we became good friends!
Sport and culture
You can go to the gym, play volleyball, basketball, cricket, badminton, go swimming at the campus. There are many cultural clubs you go to too.
Food, local specialties
We were eating basically just Indian food. It is good, but extremely spicy!! There was rice all the time, fried puffs, potato and not very much meat. But you can get used to the spiciness. The food in general was very good.
Other information
Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic
I did not communicate with IAESTE Czech Republic at all. The only time I talked to them was the acceptance interview. We communicated mostly through Facebook.
Recommendations for students who will go to the same place
Get vaccinated, take a mosquito repellent, be ready to throw out all your clothes, it will all get moldy. Get your student visa soon enough.
What not to forget with you
Visa, Money, towels, deodorant :)
