About the country

Location of the place

Japan, it's in East Asia surrounded by Pacific Ocean. But if you don't know that, you have some serious geography issues.

City

I lived in Tokyo which is currently world's biggest city, so there are naturally many things to discover. I'll name just a few: Shinjuku, Kabukitcho, Ueno, Senso-ji, Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, Odaiba, TeamLab, Kamakura.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

Nature in Japans is wonderful. There are many possibilities of hiking or trips around Tokyo, for example:

Nikko
Kuraizawa
I recommend buying Tokyo Wide Pass which is train pass for all JR operated trains in Kanto region for 3 consecutive days, it costs 10000¥.

Employer

Employer

Graduated school of Engineering , The University of Tokyo Department of Systems Innovation. My supervisor was prof. Seiichi Koshizuka.

Work description

I worked on application for visualization of fluid simulation results. The laboratory I worked for focused on particle simulation systems.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

Depends on how much do you want to see/try. Base salary was enough for cheap food and transportation from/to work and nothing else. Basically, you have to pay for any trips or free time activities from your own money.

Language requirements

Excellent, although I didn't meet any Japanese who would speak at least some decent level of English. I have never seen such a poor level of English in any other country in the world!

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

Excellent, provided by university (Freshroom). I had my own room. Kitchen, showers, toilets and sinks were shared. I took me around 40 minutes to get to campus where I worked with metro.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organised events...)

Quite poor. I joined only one from 3 events in 2 months. The pick-up was quite ok, but my CP recommended me the most expensive train from airport!

Meeting other foreign students

I met a lot of foreign people. Basically every IAESTE trainee was accommodated in Freshroom, to it was quite easy to meet people there. Apart from that, it is really easy to spot foreigners in Japan and just talk to them...

Sport and culture

Quite good, university had a really nice gym with pool. I don't know about culture, I'm not a man of culture anyway.

Food, local specialties

Excellent. My favorite is Ramen. It's impossible to describe Japanese cousin, you just have to try it, it's completely different that the European one. The quality of food was generally very high, but fruits and vegetables were ridiculously expensive.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

Internet, phone, I guess? What kind of question is this anyway? We live in 21st century...

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Definitely take some Yens (Japanese currency) with you, at least 200€. In most of the shops only cache is accepted and it can take a while till you receive your scholarship/payment.
Visit the nature, don't spend all your time in Tokyo or other cities.

What not to forget with you

Yens, passport, passport photos (for ID cards). If you want to travel a lot I recommend this: https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2361.html
I may seem like a lot of money, but commuting in Japan is mad expensive, so really...it's a good if you use it wisely.

Benefits of the internship

Discovering the country and culture. Meeting new foreign people. But the main benefit of an internship is that you get to work in whole another environment and you can observe the culture from a whole another perspective. Arranging something like that on your own would be sooo much more difficult, if it wouldn't be for IAESTE. So, thanks IAESTE :)

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

Good, I guess. We communicated mostly through email. I didn't encounter any problems.

Overall experience with IAESTE

Tough question. I had some minor problems arranging my internship in the beginning, because I didn't have a passport and they requested it immediately. But everything worked out well, and I'm really thankful to IAESTE for this amazing opportunity.
