About the country

Location of the place

Vietnam is located in Southeast Asia.Prepare yourself, that Vietnam is very hot country. Temperatures commonly reach 40 degrees and there is a huge humidity. Over the summer, is also monsoon season.

City

Hanoi is in the middle of North Vietnam. It is the capital city of Vietnam. In Hanoi officially live only 7 million people, but the reality is different. Prepare yourself for thousands of motorbikes, noise and dusty air. But don't be afraid. Hanoi is beautiful, but you must find that beauty first.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

North of the Vietnam is best part of country. There is a lot of options for trips. I would like to recommend you Sa pa, Ha Giang, Ha long bay, Ninh Binh, Yen bai and Co to island :) for more info you can use this website:

Employer

Employer

TT Associates
They were so nice to me. I actually fell in love with that company!

Work description

I worked on very large projects. Company worked in amazing way with the students. The first half of the internship, I desinged one of three variations of a luxury hotel in Sa pa. I did not just drawings, but also a 3D model, visualizations etc. The second half I designed two skyscrapers in Hanoi. Again drawings with 3D models and visualizations. During the work I attended various of workshops (unfortunately in Vietnamese) and was taken to meetings with clients, I looked right into the architectural world. The work was the best on the entire internship.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

5.000.000 VND (2 mln salary, 3 mln allowance for living)

Salary was ..hmm.. how to say it. Salary was good for living, but there was one problem. Originally I should have free accommodation, but IAESTE Vietnam made a mistake and I had to pay for accommodation, and it cost almost as much as my salary (4.600.000 VND). So I move to cheaper accommodation in the middle of internship (yes, I still had to pay).

Language requirements

haha..English
Less of them can speak English actually. If you are good in pantomima, you'll survive. English level is really bad in Vietnam, so English GOOD is more than enough

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

I should have free accommodation, but I had to pay it. A lot of money.. The employer had arranged my accommodation, but as I wrote above, there was an error in payment. Halfway through the internship I moved to cheaper, but there I slept on a wooden board. Everywhere is enough cockroaches, but that you learn to live with.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organised events...)

The HR manager of the company picked me up at the airport.
The IAESTE member in Vietnam didnt really provide any cultural or social programme. I went on trips on my own or with other trainees. IAESTE Vietnam actually care about Thai Nguyen students, but not about us (as much as I imagined).

Meeting other foreign students

Throughout the internship, we were in Hanoi just two. I met a member of the Polish IAESTE. Thank goodness for her. We traveled together, etc.

Sport and culture

Vietnamese love football, badminton and running. If you want to experience the culture, let vietnamese invite you to family events, weddings, Independence Day etc.

Food, local specialties

Variety of fresh vegetables and fruits. The best way is to buy them in the market, but I had to go always with some vietnamese - when i went shopping alone, they would triple up the prices, even though they knew me.
Best dishes were: Bun Cha, Bun bo, Pho bo
And, you could try a dog meat, cause it is part of their culture (especially at Independence day)

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

via Skype, buy a Vietnamese SIM card for calling and use wifi for skype ;)

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

Worst of Vietnamese are Vietnamese tourists, while the ethnic inhabitants or my colleagues, they were the kindest people I've probably ever met.
Prepare yourself for very bad English level with a strong Vietnamese accent, on heat, rain, cockroaches, rats, typhoons, incredibly beautiful scenery nature, good food and a bit of culture shock. Otherwise, I recommend you definitely rent a motorbike! It is the basis!!

What not to forget with you

Sunscreen, sandals, medicines for digestion and good mood

Benefits of the internship

Experience gained from my work, discovering new cultures, beautiful places known from television and the internet, and such a test of survival. I tried a lot, and I found myself. I find out things about myself, how I can deal with new situations and survive alone in that crazy country :)

Cooperation with IAESTE in the foreign country

My experience is bad (because of that problem with accommodation), but I believe, that normally it is ok. But, IASTE member didnt really organize any trips for Hanoi students.

Overall experience with IAESTE

Sorry, but disappointment. Their fault with the accommodation ruined me internship little bit.
