About the country

Location of the place

Tunis is located in the north of the Africa, which means - hot weather, sea, friendly people.

City

Tunis is the capital of Tunisia. City itself has around 2 000 000 inhabitants and its pretty big. Our house was located in La Goulette - port of the Tunis. Each trainee lived in the same house, which was a great advantage. House itself was old, dirty, but in the end, everyone agreed that it felt like home.
In Tunis, public transport is pretty chaotic. You can use local metro (which is more like train - it doesnt go underground), buses (i never used, they dont have arrival schedule on bus stops, so you could wait forever), public taxis (big van for around 10 people, you need to stop it yourself and explain, where you want to go) or normal yellow taxis (very cheap, very common everywhere in the city - around 2 euros for 20 mins in taxi)
Tunis also offers a lot of amazing clubs for party. Prizes in clubs are much higher than you would expected considering prizes for food etc.

Surroundings (possible trips, ...)

Every weekend, there was a trip organized by local IAESTE. We had our own rented bus, which took us to beautiful beaches, mountains or any other place needed.
One weekend, we made our own hiking trip. It was around 2 hours by bus, but it was worth it.

Employer

Employer

I was employed by huge tunisian company - PIRECO. Company itself works on many projects in Chemical engineering and other fields. Everything there was (compared to the city, our house,...) very luxurious. Their building was placed in ''business'' part of the city, near embassies and other big companies. Some days they offered me water and snacks.
People were friendly, but except for the bosses, they didnt understand english very good. Bosses gave me job and i was free to talk with them anytime, if i had some problems. Normal employees didnt talk to me at all.

Work description

First day, i explained my boss, what i studied in school etc. After that, i got my place and internet connection in the office. Next day he came with project about sea water desalination and gave me time to read it, study it.
Later i had to write around 25 pages about the topic, using their books and internet. This part was interesting for me, i learned a lot of new information about water desalination using reverse osmosis.
Second part of my job was to do some calculations for the project. It wasn't very hard.

Salary (sufficient for local conditions?)

My salary was 400 TND for month. In the end, i spend at work only around 4 of 6 weeks (one week i was sick, one week for the South Trip). I still got paid 600 TND as if i worked 6 weeks, which was nice.
Problem was that i got all of the money my last day at work. There is a problem with exchanging dinars back to euros/dolars, so if its possible, talk to your employer and get him pay you every week.

Language requirements

Everyone in the company knew arabic and french. Bosses and few other people knew english. It would be much easier if i could speak at least french, but anyway, everything went ok.

Accommodation (price, who provided it)

Accomodation was provided by local IAESTE. I had my own room. Price was very low.

Social life

Meeting IAESTE members (pick-up at the airport, organised events...)

IAESTE Tunisia is group of amazing people. Starting with pick-up at the airport, everything was perfect. Every trip was well organised and especially the south trip was once-a-life-time experience.

Meeting other foreign students

Our house was full of other young trainees. I have new 50 friends from countries all around the world.

Sport and culture

Once a week we played football. Also, we used to swim and run with other students.

Food, local specialties

Tunisian food is very tasty, they use a lot of spicy Harrisa. I enjoyed their fastfood for good prizes, good couscous and local sweets. It is worth trying new food and dont stay at familiar things.

Other information

Possibilites to communicate with the Czech Republic

Skype, phone, emails,...

Recommendations for students who will go to the same place

After changing your money at the airport, take the receipt. Use a lot of sunscreen during your first weeks. Try Celtia beer. Enjoy Tunisia.

What not to forget with you

Sunscreen. Money. Good mood.

Benefits of the internship

Improvement of English, lot of new friends, independence, confidence, working experience, memories.
